4 Reasons Why You Should Keep Your Receipt

This is the first part of “Keep the Receipt,” a five-part blog series about the various advantages paper receipts offer to businesses and consumers, and why you should elect to choose to offer – and accept – paper receipts.

There’s no denying it. The world is going digital. But does it make sense to digitize everything?

In our latest blog series, “Keep the Receipt,” we will discuss the myriad of advantages a paper receipt can offer over an emailed one. These benefits range from higher return on investment (ROI) for a business, to bookkeeping benefits for consumers, and everything in between. Don’t just take it from us; in a recent survey, 68% of US consumers said they would rather receive a physical receipt.

While this blog post will give you a brief overview of the different reasons why to keep the receipt, check back for future blog posts that will dive deeper into each benefit.

So, without further ado, here are the four reasons why you should keep your receipt:

    1. Return on Investment and User Experience

The ROI when it comes to a paper receipt versus an email receipt is irrefutable. In the next post of our series, we will explore the different ways paper receipts can save businesses a real chunk of change – let’s just say the numbers are eye-opening. Did you know the cost to print a receipt is just fractions of a penny? When compared to direct mail, which can cost between 30 cents to over $10 per person, you can see how easily the savings can stack up.

Our second blog post will also explore how paper receipts offer a smoother, more reliable user experience for shoppers. When you choose to provide paper receipts, you’re helping your shoppers receive fewer junk emails, as well as making it easier to retrieve promotions.

    2. Marketing Advantages

One of the great advantages of a paper receipt is that it’s a valuable marketing opportunity for businesses. Our third blog post will discuss the various marketing features a paper receipt can provide, including its ability to successfully deliver messaging to nearly every single shopper, as well as its potential to onboard customers to loyalty programs and grow a retailer’s social media following.

We’ll also discuss the value of printed promotions. For example, did you know that consumers still prefer print over digital coupons?

    3. Informational Benefits

At the end of the day, a receipt communicates information from a business to a shopper. While the above blog post dives into the marketing side of this, our fourth blog will explore the informational benefits paper receipts have. Receipts can help business owners and shoppers alike keep track of:

    • Itemized purchase information,
    • Return policy details,
    • Correct tip amounts,
    • And much more.
    4. Sustainability

We understand that one of the biggest selling points of an emailed receipt is that it can be more environmentally friendly. That may be true when comparing an emailed receipt to a traditional paper receipt that is coated with BPA (Bisphenol A), a controversial chemical. However, in our fifth and final blog post, we’ll explore the reasons Star receipts are eco-friendlier than others on the market, including:

    • Being BPA-free,
    • Featuring recyclable packaging,
    • Including paper reduction technologies,
    • And more!

Be sure to tune into our future Keep the Receipt blogs, which will take a deeper dive into these topics.

  • 3 Easy Omnichannel Retail Strategies

    3 Easy Omnichannel Retail Strategies

The term omnichannel retail has been making headlines recently, but what exactly is it? According to Shopify,

“Omnichannel retail doesn’t require you to be everywhere, just everywhere your customers are. This distinction is what separates top-performing enterprises from the rest.

Omnichannel retailing is a fully-integrated approach to commerce, providing shoppers a unified experience across all channels or touchpoints.

True omnichannel shopping goes beyond brick-and-mortar locations to mobile-browsing, online marketplaces, social media, and wherever your users browse online through retargeting ads.”

Why You Need an Omnichannel Strategy

Creating an all-encompassing experience for your shoppers is of utmost importance. Three common and effective methods of delivering an omnichannel dynamic are retail loyalty programs, customer surveys, and online reviews.

    1. Retail Loyalty Programs: Simply put, a retail loyalty program is a marketing program designed to motivate customers to continue to shop at/use the services providing by a given business. Common features of loyalty programs are personalized rewards, integrated social media actions, referral marketing, a game-like structure with levels and badges, and special coupons. Did you know …
      • 87% of shoppers reported that they want brands to have loyalty programs
      • 3 out of 4 Americans have at least one retail loyalty card
      • 84% of loyalty program members are likely to choose the program retailer over its competitor
      • 71% feel their loyalty programs deliver benefits that are important to them
    2. Customer Surveys: Implementing an online survey is an easy way to gain valuable feedback from your customers. What better way to improve your business strategy than receiving honest feedback from the ones who matter the most, your clientele? (Looking for some guidance on what questions to include? Browse 16 excellent customer survey examples.) Did you know …
      • For every customer who complains to a business, 26 other customers don’t voice their feelings – and you need that valuable information!
      • 95% of customers share bad experiences with others – get ahead of this and address the issue with the customer directly before the negative experience spreads to potential customers
      • 81% of companies who are able to deliver customer experience excellence outperform their competition
      • Resolve a complaint in the customer’s favor and they will do business with you again 70% of the time
    3. Online Reviews: Digital transformation is here, and a large portion of today’s consumers browse online reviews of businesses before choosing where to shop, dine out, and more. Your online reputation is important to draw in new business. In fact, did you know …
      • 97% of people read reviews for local businesses
      • 91% of 18-34-year-olds trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations
      • 68% of consumers will leave a review if asked
      • A one-star increase in Yelp rating leads to a 5-9% increase in revenue

    How to Onboard Customers

So now that you know the basic pieces to the omnichannel puzzle, how do you go about actually getting your customers to engage? To effectively grow your retail loyalty program, customer survey results, and online reputation, you must raise awareness … and that’s where PromoPRNT comes in.

With PromoPRNT, you can create custom on-receipt promotions (for free) that are delivered directly into the shopper’s hand via your Star printer. These promotions prompt customers to sign up for a loyalty program, provide feedback, and/or write a review. A whopping 78% of businesses say their customers don’t have a smooth brand experience across channels – be a business that does and stand out!

And guess what? It’s very easy to get started! We’ve created three omnichannel templates for you to use, which are now available to customize in the PromoPRNT dashboard:

  • Cashless Society: The Pros and Cons

Cashless Society: The Pros and Cons

You’ve probably heard the term “cashless society” popping up in the news lately. But what exactly is a cashless society, and what does it mean for businesses and consumers?

Simply put, “cashless” not only includes debit and credit cards, but mobile wallets, electronic payment apps (like Zelle, PayPal, and Venmo), and cryptocurrencies.

    Who is cashless?

According to Square, half of consumers used their card for an $8 transaction in 2015. Four years later, the transaction size has dropped dramatically, with half of consumers using their card for a $4.50 purchase in 2019.

In fact, nearly one-third of Americans have stopped using cash for typical weekly spending, and on an international level, in Sweden only 15% of retail sales are made in cash, and some banks no longer handle cash at all.

    Who is NOT cashless?

Philadelphia was the first major city in the United States to ban cashless retail, and at the time this was written, New York City, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Chicago are currently considering similar policies.

On a state level, New Jersey and Massachusetts have banned cashless retail stores and restaurants.

So, why the debate? Let’s explore the benefits – and risks – of a cashless society.

    Contactless-e1574805742726

    Pros

    A cashless society could:

    • Boost Business Operational Efficiency: By presenting the opportunity for smoother, faster, and automated transactions and bookkeeping, businesses could complete customer transactions and back-office bookkeeping faster.
    • Strengthen Security: If a digital wallet falls into the wrong hands, it can be simple to shut down, and some cashless features (like biometric authentication) can enhance security.
    • Increase Convenience: Cashless payments (clearly) eliminate the need to carry cash, and digital payments can be made with a simple tap or wave of a smartphone. Additionally, cashless technology can create an easier currency exchange during international travels.
    • Lower Crime: A cashless society could potentially lower crime rates as there would be no tangible money to steal. Cashless transactions could also mean less money laundering because of a consistent paper trail would automatically be created.

    Cash-e1574805763949

    Cons

On the other hand, a cashless society could also:

    • Exclude Populations: For many individuals, cash is still king; 4 million households in the United States (or 6.5% of all households) were unbanked in 2017. A cashless society could exclude significant populations, like the elderly and low-income individuals, from being potential customers.
    • Create Security Risks: We know we just discussed security benefits, but there are also potential security risks to going cashless. For example, if someone’s phone is stolen, hackers could crack the PIN and access the victim’s mobile wallet(s). It’s likely that cybercriminals are working on specific hacking strategies in anticipation of a cashless, card-less future. Additionally, more cashless transactions means the potential for even more exposed personal information to possible data breaches, and for small businesses that could be a major risk: 43% of cyber-attack targets are small businesses.
    • Present Technological Problems: Simply put, technical difficulties (such as internet outages) could leave users with no access to money.
    • Increase Fees: According to XpressMoney.com, “Every time you pay by card, intermediaries charge a transaction fee. These fees would become unavoidable in a cashless society. On the other hand, most ATMs don’t charge you to withdraw cash, and you don’t pay any fees when you buy something with it. There’s no imminent danger of cash completely disappearing from circulation. However, both governments and consumers need to be aware of the potential pitfalls of a cashless society, as advances in technology mean we’re increasingly relying on digital forms of payment.”

Because Star Micronics is always leading and always innovating, our team likes to keep a finger on the pulse of the latest industry trends and keep you posted on how they could potentially affect your business.

  • How Gen Z is Helping Brick-and-Mortar Thrive

How Gen Z is Helping Brick-and-Mortar Thrive

It’s not what you would expect. The very last group of people you’d imagine would prefer shopping in-person does just that. True digital natives, they grew up in the digital age, and are connected to a device for multiple hours per day.

Who are they? They’re Gen Z, and they love physical retail! In fact, according to a study conducted by IBM and the National Retail Federation, 98% said they prefer to shop in brick-and-mortar stores.

So why does Gen Z, or the generation of people born between 1996 and 2010, love physical retail? Let’s take a deep dive into what drives them to appreciate the in-store experience more than other generations and how today’s businesses can successfully engage with them.

Why Gen Z Loves Brick-and-Mortar Retail

    In-Person Shopping

First and foremost, according to the HRC Retail Advisory, Gen Z loves the in-person aspect of shopping at a mall or retail store. There’s something special about interacting with a brand in-person that online shopping just cannot do.

To leverage this unique advantage, focus on providing appealing store design as well as top-notch, personalized customer service – but only when your Gen Z shoppers want it (more on this point later).

    Being Rewarded

HRC also provided some interesting information about Gen Z and reward/loyalty programs.

According to the Advisory, “Gen Zers want and demand reward experiences, with instant feedback and satisfaction especially important.” Keep your shoppers coming back for more by offering more.

The Merge of Physical and Digital

Let’s not forget that Gen Z still loves their smartphones, but what sets them apart is that they look to retailers to merge the physical with the digital.

According to MediaPost, Gen Z looks for retail shopping to be supported by mobile technology so that they can browse a shoe aisle in-store and instantly receive a mobile coupon for said footwear. In other words, “To Gen Z, retail and ecommerce shopping isn’t an ‘us vs. them’ scenario; rather, the two complement each other and accentuate the shopping experience.”

How to Cater to Gen Z

    Support Self-Service

While they love being in the store, Gen Zers actually prefer to be left alone while they shop. In fact, a study conducted by Oracle NetSuite, Wakefield Research, and The Retail Doctor found that 42% of Gen Zers become annoyed by increased interactions with retail associates (versus millennials, Gen X, and baby boomers, who report feeling welcomed with more interaction).

Enable your Gen Z shoppers to shop within their comfort zone by incorporating self-service technologies, like AI- and VR-enabled apps (79% of retail executives feel the use of these would lead to increased sales), and self-service kiosk technology. It’s also important to provide a strong Wi-Fi connection so customers can successfully bridge the gap between physical and digital without any hiccups or headache.

    Create Convenience

It’s important to remember that many members of Gen Z came of age and began spending money when two-day delivery policies were common, so they value and have high expectations when it comes to convenience, a recent Morning Consult study To accommodate these expectations, be sure to offer convenient options like buy online/pick up in store, buy online/return in store, and more.

    Boost Branding

Gen Z spends over 4 hours per day on their smartphones. Are you capturing their attention online? To best appeal to them digitally, it’s a good idea to be active on social media and create content in an appealing format that targets their specific interests.

A good rule of thumb is to create content that’s easy to digest in just one glance, uses language that Gen Z uses (like emoji), and that’s highly shareable. Video is also a great idea – nearly half of Gen Z visits YouTube daily! Be sure to research which platforms to invest your time and money on – Instagram and Snapchat are more popular with Gen Z than Facebook, for example.

Looking to drive your shoppers to your social media accounts? A great way to do just that is by promoting your social accounts on your receipts, which customers are sure to see. Another great branding opportunity that’s sure to please is a loyalty program, which can also be promoted on receipts and feeds into the desire for Gen Z to receive perks, as well as connect the digital and physical retail realms.

In summary, keep these things in mind when it comes to Gen Z shoppers:

They value a convenient shopping experience that seamlessly merges physical and digital retail by incorporating mobile coupons and tailored social media messaging. They also prefer to shop at their own pace, in their own way. When it comes to this generation, it’s all about the omnichannel retail experience!
