  • Star Micronics Partners with Flash Order to Transform the Cafeteria Ordering Experience

Star Micronics Partners with Flash Order to Transform the Cafeteria Ordering Experience

Cafeterias play an especially important role in hospital and university settings, providing students, patients, and staff members with quick, nutritious meals to keep them energized throughout the day in a setting where cooking your own food is not a viable option.

Contra Costa College in San Pablo, CA has a student population of about 6,000, and it is not uncommon for its campus cafeteria to serve up to 10% of the student population at once during busy hours. Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Center in Vacaville, CA has a population that sits at around a hefty 15,000 and its cafeteria serves a large number of patients, staff members, and guests daily.

Flash Order provides a digital self-order platform for hospitality environments, with a special focus on cafeterias like those in Contra Costa College and Vacaville Medical Center. As a self-order kiosk app, Flash Order makes it easy for cafeterias to provide a fast customer experience and a streamlined, accurate ordering process.

    Free Self-Service Kiosk Resources

The future of many industries lies with self-service solutions. That’s why Star Micronics is offering free online ordering resources for resellers and software developers who are helping customers future-proof their businesses with self-service solutions.

    The Challenge

Recently, cafeterias have been under mounting pressure to save on operating expenses due to the rising costs of labor and food. They are also faced with rising consumer demand and increased competition, making it imperative to deliver fast service and positive customer experiences.

In the past, cafeterias relied on written paper tickets to fulfill orders, however, this came at a cost. Handwritten orders can be difficult to read, and it is easy for front-of-house staff to miss modifiers, sides, and other items as they are given when it takes longer to write the order than it takes for a customer to dictate it.

These handwritten ordering processes resulted in too many errors.

For cafeterias, this can lead to major losses in profits from food waste when orders need to be re-made, as well as decreased consumer trust and a poor customer experience. Order errors not only delay the customer that placed the order, but all the customers in line behind them. In a hospital or university setting, cafeterias serve hundreds of customers in a short time frame, so order errors are a major issue.

    The SolutionmC-Print3

Cafeterias require a technology upgrade to handle the new challenges facing the industry today, and Flash Order answered the call. They developed a self-order kiosk app that can streamline the ordering process and reduce order errors. Many cafeterias have implemented the kiosk app and seen improvements in the ordering process.

Recently, Flash Order partnered with Star Micronics, which provided a robust lineup of printing options suitable for any cafeteria or self-ordering environment to reduce order errors and combat environmental challenges that make it difficult to rely on digital tickets.

The collaboration between Flash Order and Star Micronics provided self-order kiosks and integrated printers for both Contra Costa College and Kaiser Permanente Vacaville Medical Center.

The solution is designed to be a “plug-and-play” solution to reduce downtime during installation. With Flash Order, customers can simply download the app, log in with their Square credentials, and build their menus with Flash Order’s proprietary menu editor.

The entire installation took less than two weeks to go live at the college. Training was made simple by the intuitive and user-friendly app interface on the Flash Order app.

    The Results

Flash-Order-Case-Study-Hospitality-ImageryThe Star Micronics mC-Print3 printers with CloudPRNT have replaced handwritten tickets with printed tickets, which are far more reliable and easier to read. Every item the customer selects is added to the ticket with 100% accuracy, so kitchen staff is always aware of modifiers, sides, and preparation instructions that customers request on the kiosk.

The self-order kiosk has significantly reduced average customer wait time. Now, more customers can place orders at a single time, and no time is wasted handwriting customer orders on paper tickets. Sales totals are automatically calculated by the kiosk as customers enter, so front-of-house staff can process transactions much quicker.

Because of this, labor costs can be reduced as labor can be redistributed to order prep stations, helping fulfill orders even faster. However, in some locations, the need for labor increased due to the higher number of orders being placed in a shorter time frame.

The Flash Order kiosk also assists with upselling and cross-selling, increasing average ticket size, and giving customers a better view of all available menu offerings. Cafeteria operators and managers have the ability to change menu information across all locations simultaneously and remotely with the app, which helps to streamline menu management.

Overall, the Flash Order solution has increased total sales by about 16%-20% on average, with the medical center’s cafeteria in particular having seen an increase in sales by about $4,000 to $5,000 worth of orders per day.

  • Greene Street Expands to a Greene Neighborhood

Greene Street Expands to a Greene Neighborhood

From its origins as a small consignment shop in the ’90s that sold a hodgepodge of furniture, clothing, appliances, and more, Greene Street has evolved into the multi-location franchise it is today, spanning across Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Though it operated successfully as a single-location consignment shop, when the business passed from the original owners to their daughters, Greene Street began to shift its focus from an eclectic assortment of general goods to a fashionable and environmentally-conscious clothing reseller.

As consumers become more aware of the social, economic, and environmental impacts of the disposable fast fashion industry that has made a home in today’s retail space, Greene Street has risen to provide a sustainable shopping alternative, offering mid- to high-end labels at a fraction of retail prices at all of its 10 locations.

    Greene Street Promo Image

    The Challenge

As the popularity of ethical consumerism grew, Greene Street expanded along with it. The original point of sale (POS) system that had worked well enough for the retailer in the past no longer addressed the challenges of the growing business. Greene Street needed a POS system that could be tailored to their specific industry, with built-in buy/trade software.

Greene Street was looking for a feature-rich system with robust reporting and analytics software that would allow the owners to view critical sales and purchase data. They needed to keep more accurate records of what customers were buying and what they desired.

With the additional locations that they have opened, they also needed the ability to transfer items from store to store without needing to manually pull items and re-key them into the system.

Additionally, they needed a more convenient way to advertise employment opportunities and bring in applicants so they could appropriately staff the new locations.

    The Solution

    Star Micronics TSP143III and PromoPRNT

After researching its options, Greene Street chose Celerant command software, which has built-in buy/trade software and can be easily customized and modified based on the needs of the retailer. At the time of the install, Greene Street had seven locations with 11 register stations, which were all fitted with the Celerant solution, as well as the TSP143III Windows setup. As the brand added new stores, Celerant scaled with it, and is currently used in all 10 locations.

In addition to Celerant command software, Greene Street chose to use Star Micronics PromoPRNT software for its seamless integration into the Celerant system and its ability to make custom printed promotions and receipts.

After determining the solution they wanted to use, Greene Street went live within a couple of months for the first location, and added on a store every two months for the rest. When they added PromoPRNT, they were able to train employees on the software and go live the same day.

    The Results

After implementing the Celerant software, Greene Street was able to expand and add three more locations to the franchise. The integrated loyalty program enabled the retailer to foster better customer relationships and review critical data that helped with promotional marketing.

The POS software also provided more robust analytics, which allowed them to know the inventory and profitability of the products in their store. Celerant software accommodated the easy transfer of products from store to store, and provided necessary tools for streamlining operations and improving productivity.

Once the Star Micronics PromoPRNT software was integrated, Greene Street was able to solve many of its hiring challenges. The software allowed management to design and schedule promotions to be printed, and it was easy to install their own templates. Additionally, pre-loaded templates and fonts were available and easy to use.

Greene Street used the PromoPRNT solution to print receipts that advertised job openings, which allowed the retailer to spend less time recruiting candidates. They have received more applications since implementing the solution, and have been able to adequately staff all of their locations.

    The Challenge

    Casa-Cleaners-2-e1574805250581

Managing a growing business in New York City required more advanced point of sale (POS) software than what CASA had. The old PC computer hard drives they were using kept breaking down, requiring the cleaners to rely on backup drives. The inefficient manual processes and unreliable technology they were stuck with caused them to lose a considerable amount of valuable time, and even worse, customer orders.

Not only were they plagued with lost data due to hard drive failures, their legacy POS software didn’t allow CASA to connect with customers via texting or mobile apps, which stifled business growth. CASA needed a modern cloud-based POS that could handle the high volume of their business and streamline processes, with reliable data storage and accessibility.

    The Solution

After researching the most advanced POS system for dry cleaners, CASA chose to implement Sudzy POS on iPads, a Star Micronics SP742 tag printer, two Star Micronics TSP654II ticket printers, and a cash register. Two full stations were implemented, and two additional iPads were purchased for racking and scanning laundry bags.

Sudzy POS was chosen for its cloud-based data storage, user-friendly interface, two-way texting to customers, scanning capabilities for data entry, and its ability to be customized as needs grow. The Star Micronics printers were selected for the seamless integration with the POS and the fast ticket and tag printing they offer.

The installation took one week, and it took two weeks total before CASA was able to go live with the solution. The training required was minimal, as each component of the solution was designed to be intuitive and user-friendly.

    Casa-Cleaners-3-e1574805268700Results

With the Sudzy POS software and Star Micronics printers, CASA cleaners has been able to revolutionize their business processes to be much more competitive, running three times as fast and adding 25%-30% profitability. Staff can use iPad POS to safely store and backup data in the cloud, which eliminated any lost orders or data issues. The Sudzy software and advanced Bluetooth printing from the Star Micronics printers has considerably decreased the time it takes for CASA to print tags and customer tickets, allowing them to print as-needed.

Orders can now be scanned and entered, or delivered to the POS directly from the Sudzy connected app, or customers can text orders to CASA. Because of this, staff members no longer have to answer customer pickup calls and manually enter in the information every time, and instead are free to process more orders more quickly. Text notifications sent directly to customers when an order is ready for pick up or is on its way for delivery has improved overall customer service.

Delivery drivers have benefitted from the installation as well, enjoying instant access to information on mobile devices. Additionally, CASA plans on adding a mobile printing feature for further ease of delivery. The Sudzy delivery apps can be used on drivers’ mobile devices to assist with delivery, and eliminate the need for paper for an even more eco-friendly operation.

The Sudzy POS software also provides a wealth of data and reporting, which gives CASA a real-time view of operations, so they can better diagnose bottlenecks and make informed decisions. Overall, CASA Cleaners has been able to see a very quick return on investment, saving both time and labor, and allowing the business to operate at a much faster and more profitable pace.

  • TOA/MoCA Mixes it Up With Online Ordering, Star Micronics Printers

TOA/MoCA Mixes it Up With Online Ordering, Star Micronics Printers

TOA (Taste of Asia) Asian Fusion is a family-owned Asian restaurant that is known for its sushi, poke bowls, and delicious dumplings. The restaurants are a popular institution in Long Island, NY, with the first location opening three years ago and expanding to two additional restaurants in neighboring towns.

The family also owns a second group of restaurants, called MoCA Asian Bistro. There are five MoCA locations, one in Forest Hills, Queens, and four more in Long Island. The Forest Hills location is so popular, it expanded into an adjacent storefront, adding 2,000 square feet to its dining room in 2017.

    The Situation

    TOA-Case-Study-3-e1574804988892

TOA and MoCA are busy, fine dining restaurants with a large customer following. Although on-premise diners regularly crowd into the restaurants, the eateries are situated in bustling commercial areas and get a rush of lunchtime take-out orders too.

TOA and MoCA were using their staff and phone lines to take the orders, but the phone bills for multiple lines and payroll expenses soared to unmanageable levels. As orders continued to pour in during lunch shifts, the restaurant’s owners and management team started looking for a way to cut costs. An online ordering system that would reduce the restaurant’s overhead, while providing a better customer service experience for patrons, seemed to be the only solution.

And why not? Technology-driven customers, especially millennials, love online ordering. This valuable functionality allows diners to enter their orders online through the restaurant’s website, pay, and send orders automatically to the kitchen. Customers have more control over the ordering process and can peruse the menu at their own pace, securely process their payments, and never waste time on hold or redialing when there’s a busy signal.

    The Solution

The team chose the Munch online ordering system to be incorporated into their take out business in every location. The feature-rich software allows restaurants to build customized websites with an online ordering platform. Unlike more expensive online ordering and delivery services, Munch doesn’t charge hefty commission like other online ordering platform, it only costs $89 a month for the basic plan, and $129 for the feast plan.

Is Your Restaurant Ready for the Growing Online Ordering Trend?

Recently, TOA upgraded their printers to the Star Micronics mC-Print3 to save counter space in their eateries. The mC-Print3 has a stylish cube design that was created for busy kitchens and space-conscious restaurants. The mC-Print3 includes a “protected” control board and IPX2 splash-proof rating, to guard against spills and particles that fly in even the most well-run kitchens.

With a setup that takes less than a minute and receipts that are generated quickly, TOA staff says the new printer is better than any other receipt printer they have worked with. The mC-Print3 has a 3-inch compact footprint, fast 250 mm/second printing, and front feed and paper loading for high-quality receipts and graphics.

TOA’s ownership is also using Munch’s email marketing services, so the restaurants can issue discount codes, coupons, and points to new and returning customers. Munch built TOA’s entire website and assisted the team with branding, online ordering apps, and marketing. The electronic platform also allows the restaurants to save money on printing menus and other marketing materials.

The chain’s first location was installed and live within a week. The drag-and-drop software is easy to learn and use, so there was no formal training necessary, and the remaining restaurants went online two days later.

    Free Online Ordering Resources

Social distancing has deeply affected our customers in the restaurant industry. That’s why Star Micronics is offering free online ordering resources for VARs and ISVs helping restaurants navigate the implementation of online ordering.

    TOA-Case-Study-2-e1574805004338

    Results

After implementing the online ordering software, the restaurant’s ownership was able to drastically reduce the number of cashiers and phone lines, which saves them over $10,000 every month.

The restaurants have also seen an uptick in order accuracy and efficiency, especially for larger orders. With a large volume of business coming from nearby offices, it’s not uncommon for the restaurant to receive orders for hundreds of dollars’ worth of food. That’s a lot of opportunity for mistakes, which cost time, resources, and energy to correct. The Munch system gives the customers control over their orders, so there are fewer mistakes made while inputting the orders. Tickets are sent directly to the kitchen, so the number of customer complaints has declined as orders are being taken, prepared, and delivered faster and more accurately.

Munch’s loyalty and marketing support through the online ordering app also increases customer engagement by offering discounts and reward points for purchases that can be redeemed by returning customers.

  • Dry Point Distillers Installs Nobly EPOS to Manage Bustling Tasting Room

Dry Point Distillers Installs Nobly EPOS to Manage Bustling Tasting Room

Dry Point Distillers is a craft micro-distillery in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The company started as a hobby and evolved into a business that produces top-notch spirits and cocktails, served at a hickory bar in Dry Point’s small tasting room in Mesilla. The craft distiller produces spirits in tiny batches, all made by hand, incorporating local farm-to-table ingredients like honey mesquite pods, fresh red chile from the valley, and prickly pear fruits from local ditch banks.

Dry Point Distillers pays homage to its New Mexico roots, using locally sourced ingredients and naming its products and cocktails for the surrounding area, including Mesa Vodka, Monsoon Gin, and Dry Spell Bourbon Whiskey.

    The Situation

The father/son duo of Stefan and Chris Schaefer, a former fire fighter for the U.S. Forest Service, began producing spirits with only a fuel alcohol distilling permit and five-gallon pot still. With the help and guidance of his cousins from a nearby bar and distillery, Chris began experimenting with fermentable products to refine the process that would eventually become his business.

Although Chris and Stefan had honed their craft-spirit process and perfected it, the duo was new to running a business. Dry Point Distillers opened in October 2018 and immediately became a hot spot—it’s normal to see every seat filled in the 15-person tasting room. The small distillery also supplies wholesale products to local liquor stores and a second location is under consideration.

The Schaefers quickly recognized that a cash register wasn’t going to give them the automation and functions they needed to process transactions, maintain accurate inventory counts, and track customers in the busy tasting room.

    Dry-Point-e1574804113158

    The Solution

Realizing they needed a point of sale system, Chris turned to the internet to find a company that could help them install a single terminal at the right price point. After researching several vendors, he found Nobly POS, a U.K.-based company with offices in the U.S., Uruguay, and Australia. The company focuses on point of sale solutions for small, independent businesses around the world, which made it the perfect fit for the Dry Point Distillery.

Nobly’s attractive, tablet-based solution includes the features the distillery was looking for, including CRM, inventory tracking, workforce management, onboarding, and support, minus the hefty price tag. After an online demo, the Schaefers felt confident enough to sign on the dotted line.

Dry Point Distillers’ new point of sale system includes Nobly EPOS, a cloud-based POS software solution designed for the hospitality industry, an Apple iPad, and a Heckler Windfall iPad Stand, a stylish but heavy steel enclosure that keeps the iPad secure. Nobly also supplied the Star Micronics TSP143III receipt printer.

The TSP143III series offers a simple and extremely reliable tether connection for iOS devices via USB connectivity, while simultaneously charging the device that it is connected to. The TSP143III uses the Apple Lightning cable for “plug and play” setup.

Nobly POS assisted the distillery owners with getting their database set up, entering inventory, and training the staff. The system was so simple, it took three hours for the owners to fully understand its features and only 30 minutes to train the staff.

    The Result

After several weeks with their new system, Dry Point Distillers has benefited from newly streamlined operations, and labor and inventory management. The company’s staff is processing transactions faster and managing their inventory more effectively. Reviewing sales numbers and identifying the most popular shifts, drinks, and products is easy using the system’s reporting options. Back office tasks like payroll are faster with the system’s time clock and tip functions.

The Schaefers have been able to drastically reduce the amount of time spent counting bottles and merchandise, so they can focus on their spirits and the customers who stop by to enjoy a cocktail and taste the latest offerings.

  • Wings Pizza n Things Manages High-Volume Sales, Has a Reliable Total Solution with Paradise POS

Wings Pizza n Things Manages High-Volume Sales, Has a Reliable Total Solution with Paradise POS

When sports fans in Temple, Texas, want to enjoy great food while watching the game, they head for Wings Pizza n Things. Voted the best wings in central Texas for 10 years running, the single-location, 40-employee restaurant sells about 50,000 wings each week. Customer favorites also include pizza, burgers, and authentic Philly cheesesteaks. Since owners Mike and Sara Dent opened Wings Pizza n Things in 2006, their goals were serving fresh, quality menu items and creating a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

    The Challenge

Wings Pizza n Things needed to find a point of sale (POS) solution provider that could equip its business with the innovative technology it needs to handle a high-volume of sales. The restaurant also wanted to partner with a POS provider that could deliver a total solution, including POS hardware and software, reliable printer solutions for the front- and back-of-house, payment processing, and fast efficient service.

    The Solution

When the Dents met the Paradise POS team, they knew they found the right partner. Paradise POS was the one-stop-shop for POS, third-party peripherals like kitchen ticket printers and receipt printers, credit card processing, and personalized customer support and service that Wings Pizza n Things was looking for. Owner Mike Dent says he was impressed by Paradise POS’ iPad-based system that equipped servers with mobile POS and gave his business a way to easily benefit from future innovation. “They were the only company that offered software updates, so as the technology improved, your POS system improved as well,” says Dent. “With other companies you basically purchased software, and you were never able to take advantage of the
always-improving technology that was out there.”Paradise-POS-Wings-Things-e1574803711105

Because of Paradise POS’ roots in payment processing, the company provided Wings Pizza n Things with a comprehensive POS and payment solution. “That’s a difficult thing to find in this business,” says Dent. “If we have any POS or credit card issues, we literally make one phone call.” Dent adds that, because of their Texas roots, the Paradise POS team is easy to work with. “They’re very friendly and that comes through when you’re talking to them,” he says.

Wings Pizza n Things began working with Paradise POS in 2012, originally installing three Paradise POS terminals. The Paradise POS system is iPad-based, which combines legacy POS functionality with the easy-to-use iOS interface. The reliable Paradise POS system also features offline mode, so the system keeps working, even if there is an internet outage.

The Wings Pizza n Things solution also utilizes two models of Star Micronics printers. The TSP700 series impact printer is used in the kitchen due to its durability and high-quality ticket printing in a hot, humid kitchen environment. It is also capable of multicolor printing; by printing modifiers in red, it helps to eliminate confusion in the kitchen and increases speed. In the front of the house, the restaurant uses the Star TSP650 series for receipt printing. Wings Pizza n Things uses printer routing during busy times, and the printers aid the restaurant with branding due to their ability to print logos on receipts.

Dent says, “We were the first pizza restaurant POS system Paradise POS installed, so they worked with us until we had all the components we needed to operate efficiently, from the modifiers to being able to break down pizza toppings per slice and making it all understandable for the kitchen.

“They learned with us and were open to the changes we needed to make it work. They were with us 100% along the way — there’s not another company out there like that.” Dent was impressed that the Paradise team was willing to stay for a few days after installation to address any issues that occurred.

When the restaurant expanded in 2015 and the volume of business grew, Paradise POS equipped Wings Pizza n Things with two additional terminals and eight server iPads. With advancements in Paradise POS’ capabilities, parts of the second installation were managed remotely and it only took a few days for the restaurant to have full use of the system.

  • MBTA Introduces Mobile Credit Card Payment Option

MBTA Introduces Mobile Credit Card Payment Option

Keolis Commuter Service (Keolis) operates the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) rail system, the fifth largest in North America. The MBTA and Keolis recently expanded their partnership to align through incentives and global best practices increases to revenue and ridership. As a component of this directive, the rail operator recognized a need for better insight into ticket and revenue numbers than what the MBTA’s paper ticket system provided. The paper tickets were tallied once a month, making limited data available only once every 30 days. In order to create a new marketing and promotional campaign that would boost ridership and optimize schedules, Keolis needed readily available, in-depth data that could form the basis of its new growth initiative.

    The Challenge

    MBTA-Case-Study-Mobile-Payment-1-e1574803507383

In addition to addressing the lack of data, Keolis wanted to tackle another problem: a top complaint from passengers was the inability to pay onboard with a credit or debit card. MBTA’s Greater Boston area commuter rail moves an estimated 127,000 riders a day, but its onboard ticketing options were limited. Passengers could purchase tickets with cards from a kiosk at the station or in-person at a ticket window. However, if riders boarded the train without tickets, they would have to pay cash, or download the MBTA’s Commuter Rail mobile ticketing app.

Boston is a large tourism destination, so visitors or occasional users on board who didn’t have cash had two choices: download the app to pay or be issued a post-ride payment form to mail in later. Additionally, this cash-only option onboard was a security issue for conductors who had to carry large sums of money. Since fares are determined by departure and arrival zones, for non-ticket holders onboard, conductors had to memorize zone pricing to calculate the fare of a ticket, accept payment, then calculate the change to return to the passenger, or issue a non-payment form before moving on to the next rider. There could be up to 188 travelers in each car, so waiting for people to download the app or issuing them a post-ride payment form made each conductor’s job take longer than it should. In addition, riders who accepted the post-payment form were on the honor system to mail it in, so MBTA would risk loss of revenue on riders who didn’t carry cash.

    The Solution

Conductors already carried Mobile Computing Devices (MCD) to receive notifications and train information, so Keolis sought a solution that would integrate with the hardware that was already in use. The rail operator partnered with the software company e-Nabler Corp, developers of eMobilePOS suite of point-of-sale applications for their unique mobile solutions expertise, who developed RailSales mPOS, which supports onboard ticket purchases with various tender types such as credit or debit cards. e-Nabler’s system runs on the Apple iPhone 6S (MCD) with an Infinite Peripherals Linea Pro 6 scanner and a Star Micronics SM-S230i handheld printer. Star’s SM-S230i is a 2” portable Bluetooth and USB printer that is compact and lightweight, so it can be worn on the conductors’ belts. The printer is MFi certified and easily connects to and pairs with the MCD.

    MBTA-Case-Study-Mobile-Payment-e1574803526716

This setup allows conductors to use the same interface they were already familiar with, which eliminated the need to carry a second mobile device and train on a new mobile operating system. The RailSales ticketing application’s new dynamic scheduling interface gives conductors up-to-the-minute train, zone and station selections for fare calculations and makes the end-of-day shift reconciliation accurate and much more convenient. RailSales mPOS also gives passengers the ability to pay on the train with a credit or debit card, or cash and get a receipt that can be validated visually or by scanning the receipt’s QR code.

The new fully operational integrated mobile RailSales solution was successfully rolled out in record time to approximately 400 conductors over four months after a successful 10-conductor pilot.

  • The Bang Candy Store Gets a Sweet Deal from Cohub and Star Micronics

The Bang Candy Store Gets a Sweet Deal from Cohub and Star Micronics

When Sarah Souther experienced a handmade marshmallow for the first time, it sparked a curiosity for the confectionary arts, and a desire to experiment with flavors. Soon after, she discovered an affinity for candy creation, and launched The Bang Candy Company, an artisan marshmallow company specializing in high-end sweets.

    Bang-Candy-1-e1574803177118

Now a popular and successful business, the shop prides itself in its ability to create decadent candies, syrups, and other treats, without the use of preservatives, stabilizers, and artificial ingredients. It now serves as both a confectionery production space and a café where customers can enjoy house-made goods while watching the candy creation process.

    The Challenge

The Bang Candy Company has continuously experimented with flavors and creations, and has added a wide variety of new items to its inventory. With the growth the shop has experienced, it needed a way to streamline its inventory management.

The store is located in an area frequented by busy tourists, so inventory lookup and checkout processes both needed to be sped up. The Bang Candy Company has also been looking to implement pop-up shops around the holidays, which required additional registers, but the expense presented an obstacle.

    Bang-Candy-2-e1574803194253

    The Solution

The Bang Candy Company chose to use an iPad-based POS system that allows for portability in order to
accommodate the flagship store, as well as any future pop-up shops. The iPad runs Cohub software, which features detailed, real-time inventory tracking and management, and provides an easy way to search for items and filter results. Cohub was also able to create an app for The Bang Candy Company, which enabled them to integrate the Star Micronics TSP100IIIBi receipt printer with their POS software.

The installation at the flagship store only required one system in order to suit The Bang Candy Company’s needs without exceeding the budget. In just a couple of hours, the system was installed and ready to use. Cohub trained the shop’s team on how to use the Cohub software and Star Micronics hardware. Because of the technology’s ease-of-use, training was fast and simple, and Cohub remained on-site the first day the software was rolled out.

NUSHOP Online Ordering System Partners with Star to Revolutionize SMB Restaurants and Retailers

When it comes to point of sale (POS) and online ordering technology, it can be difficult for small and medium sized businesses (SMB) to compete with the resources of large chain competitors. Gone are the days where it was enough to have an in-store POS system. In today’s omnichannel marketplace, it’s imperative for restaurants and retailers to have a website. Not only that, but consumers have come to expect the convenience of online ordering. For SMBs, the costs (not to mention the time) to keep POS and online ordering technologies functioning seamlessly are dizzying.

This is precisely what motivated Ali Bakhtiari, a software engineer, and former restaurant chain owner, to establish NUSHOP Online Ordering System. Now a global provider of managed, cloud-based POS and online ordering systems, NUSHOP offers the functionalities of enterprise grade technology at an affordability that’s ideal for SMBs.

NUSHOP offers the latest functionalities of POS systems and online ordering used by corporate competitors, to businesses of any size at a fraction of the cost. With modules for both the food industry and any kind of retail business, NUSHOP sets up a tablet POS system and website for under $1,000 and then provides software and maintenance support of both for only $100 per month. This removes the burden of management from store owners, who now can focus more time and energy in running the business instead of running technology.

The NUSHOP’s cloud-based system automatically processes online orders, sending them directly to both your business’ in-store POS and order printer. The system can support an unlimited number of printers and cash registers for both single and multiple store locations. Consumers can select options for pick-up or delivery, and the system automatically sends the orders to the ideal location for delivery based on zip code. Best of all, store owners have peace of mind knowing that the entire system can be restored in a matter of minutes should a major issue arise.

For NUSHOP’s system to provide greatest efficiency and profitability for its customers, the right printing technology would be essential.

    The Solution

The NUSHOP team partnered with Star Micronics for the technology that would provide the sophistication and processing power required to complement their streamlined POS and online ordering software. This included Star Micronics’s CloudPRNT, as well as two printer models, the TSP650II and TSP700, and two Value Series cash register models, the CD3-1313 and CD3-1616.

CloudPRNT allows for cloud-connected control of peripherals enabling printers and cash drawers to speak directly with NUSHOP’s server, saving time, increasing efficiency in order processing, and significantly decreasing the chance of error.

Both the TSP650II and TSP700 printer models have the ultra-high class-leading reliability and performance ideal for high-volume retail and restaurant establishments. With lighting fast print speeds of 60 RPM (receipts per minute), rugged construction, and thermal printing that withstands damage from heat and spills, the Star Micronics printers provided all the functionalities necessary for dependability and enhanced workflows.

Star Micronics’ printers were coupled with the cost effective and durable Value Series cash drawer models CD3-1313 and CD3-1616. The CD3 models integrate seamlessly into retail and restaurant environments, particularly where counter space is at a premium, and enhances the appearance of your POS terminal.

    The Results

NUSHOP customers find that once their domain name is setup and product photos approved, the NUSHOP system and Star Micronics CloudPRNT software can be up and running in a matter of minutes. Star Micronics printers and cash drawers are operational in seconds, needing only to be plugged into an electrical outlet.

Back office training can be done in less than an hour, and customers appreciate the ability to assign different roles to employees regarding what they can or can’t see or do within the system.

For the NUSHOP team, Star Micronics’s specialized technology supported their overall vision to provide a managed POS, website, and online ordering system that allowed SMB’s to gain a competitive edge against corporate chains, while improving productivity and profitability.

3B Apps Chooses Star Micronics Printers for a Solution That Provides SMB Restaurants with a Competitive Edge

It can be a challenge for small and medium sized (SMB) restaurants to compete with their large chain competitors when it comes to mobile technology. 3B Apps has a mission of offering affordable mobile apps to restaurants of all sizes so they can offer their customers the convenience of mobile ordering — and to level the competitive playing field.

    The Situation

3B Apps creates branded apps that are designed with the restaurant’s logo, images, and menus, which are formatted for easy ordering and payment. When a customer places an order, it is sent to an iPad in the restaurant’s kitchen where it automatically prints. This function of the solution streamlines online orders for the restaurant, reduces the need for additional labor to enter the order, and eliminates errors that can occur when orders are rekeyed.

The right printer, however, is essential for the greatest efficiency. In a loud, busy kitchen environment, it’s crucial to ensure the kitchen staff doesn’t miss any orders. 3B Apps needed to find printers that offered a level of dependability that wouldn’t leave kitchen staff wondering if they had missed an order or if an order had failed to print.

The 3B Apps team evaluated options for printers to integrate with their apps that would give restaurants the dependability and enhanced workflows they are looking for.

    The Solution

After testing numerous printer solutions on the market, 3B Apps chose two of Star Micronics’s printer models, the TSP-100III and the SM-T300i, for several key reasons: the ability to integrate Star’s API, the features of the products, affordability and customer support.

3B Apps incorporates the Star Micronics TSP-100III thermal printer into solutions for the majority of its customers. This high speed (250 mm/s) printer features easy setup, “drop in and print” paper loading, multiple connectivity options and easy Bluetooth pairing.

For 3B Apps’ customers that need increased mobility and durability — in food truck applications, for example — the Star Micronics SM-T300i provides the functionality they need from an ultra-rugged mobile thermal receipt printer. This printer, MFi certified for use with iOS devices, is easy to use and maintain, making it the perfect “kitchen gadget.”
