Kitchen Order Routing Breaks Down at Scale. A QSR Case Study.

For many QSRs, order complexity doesn’t become a problem until volume increases. Dine-in, takeout, online ordering, and delivery platforms all feed into the same kitchen, but without structured routing, orders can bottleneck at the wrong stations or get lost in the flow.

That’s exactly what Sal y Limón Mexican Cuisine was facing. As order volume grew across channels, the kitchen needed a way to route items to the right preparation areas and ensure tickets were clear, consistent, and easy to act on during peak hours.

Working with YOGO POS, the team implemented a kitchen printing and order routing system using Star Micronics printers and the StarXpand™ SDK. Orders from multiple sources were directed to specific stations, with dedicated printers supporting each part of the workflow.

We put together a short case study that looks at how the system was configured, how the integration was handled, and what changed once routing and printing were aligned with kitchen operations.

POS Printer Integration Shouldn’t Slow Down Your Platform. A New Case Study.

For many POS platforms, printing issues don’t show up during development. They show up during deployment. Different restaurant environments, network configurations, and connectivity challenges can quickly turn printing into one of the biggest sources of support calls.

That’s exactly what Selflane experienced. Printing instability wasn’t just a minor inconvenience. It was pulling engineering and service teams into troubleshooting instead of product development and growth.

By standardizing on the TSP143IV thermal receipt printer and moving to the StarXpand SDK, Selflane was able to modernize its POS printer integration, simplify installations, and reduce recurring support issues.

We put together a short case study that walks through what changed and what other ISVs can learn from it.

Build Your Product. Not Your Cloud Printing Infrastructure. A New Case Study by Star Micronics.

If you’re building a software platform that connects to the physical world, whether it’s for hospitality, retail, healthcare, or logistics, you eventually hit the same wall.

Your app is triggering real-world actions. Orders are placed. Labels need to print. Receipts must be generated. Workflows move from screen to counter to customer.

But how do those digital events reliably become real-world output without your engineering team building and maintaining the entire printing infrastructure layer?

That was the challenge facing Maple as it scaled across thousands of locations.

    A Critical Infrastructure Decision

Do you build and maintain your own cloud printing layer?

Or integrate and stay focused on your product?

    They chose focus.

By leveraging Star’s managed cloud printing infrastructure, StarIO.Online, Maple was able to scale rapidly without turning printing into an engineering burden.

For ISVs, the lesson is clear: printing may be essential, but it shouldn’t pull engineering time away from what makes your platform unique.

Welcome back to another episode of the Rising Stars Podcast! I’m really excited today because I have one of my old buddies joining me. I know I keep saying this, but truly, the guests I bring on provide valuable insights into this industry—I promise it’s not just me bringing on friends for fun! Today, I have my good friend Rob Nordby from Elo Touch Solutions with me. Rob, how are you?

Rob Nordby: I’m doing well! Thanks for having me. Excited to be here.

Kate Orara: Awesome! I’m happy you could join us today. I know you’re traveling and actually at a conference right now, so I really appreciate you taking the time to speak with me.

Rob Nordby: No worries! Excuse the background noise—I’ll just annoy everyone around me here. But let’s do it! Ready to rock.

Kate Orara: Well, it’s funny because you’re currently at a partner event, and today we’re talking about partnerships! To kick things off, for our listeners who may not be familiar with you or Elo, could you give us a brief introduction about yourself and your role?

Rob Nordby: Absolutely! I’m Rob Nordby, and I’ve been with Elo for six years. I manage our national solution provider team and programs, working with large national partners like CDW, SHI, and Insight. It’s a small but nimble team. Before Elo, I spent almost seven years at Zebra and started my career at PC Mall, which is now Insight. I’ve had a variety of roles in the industry, but my primary focus has always been on the channel, managing relationships and long-term partnerships.

Kate Orara: That’s great! You’ve worked at the manufacturer level and the reseller level. Have you worked at the distributor level as well?

Rob Nordby: That’s actually the one part of the industry I haven’t worked in, but I work closely with distribution. I have great relationships with our distributors and always advocate for collaboration between manufacturers, distributors, and resellers. Even though I’ve never worked for a distributor, I feel like I have offices at many of them!

Kate Orara: That makes sense! So, let’s talk about partnerships. What are some key traits or behaviors you look for in a successful channel partner?

Rob Nordby: Great question! A successful partner is motivated and truly embraces the term “partner.” Transparency and goal alignment are huge. Whether a partner is small or large, if we establish a long-term plan and stick to it, that makes for a great relationship. We love investing in partners who are committed to working toward mutual success.

Kate Orara: From a partner’s perspective, what should they expect in terms of support, resources, and communication from a manufacturer like Elo?

Rob Nordby: Honesty is number one. We all know about channel conflict, but maintaining a clean channel is a priority for Elo. Partners should expect reliable products, transparency about where our solutions work best, and clear guidance. We don’t just push products; we help partners find the right solutions for their customers. When manufacturers and resellers work together with honesty and a shared goal, it leads to successful rollouts and strong relationships.

Kate Orara: Speaking of rollouts, how do you involve partners in launching new products, and what are some best practices for ensuring a smooth rollout?

Rob Nordby: We prioritize roadmaps. Communication is key—we make sure partners are informed well in advance about what’s coming. Training is also essential. With large-scale rollouts, like those for Walmart or Target, understanding needs upfront and sharing that information between manufacturers and resellers prevents surprises down the road. Bringing partners in from day one creates a cohesive strategy and minimizes issues later.

Kate Orara: That makes so much sense! So, tell us about the Elo Elite Partner Program. How does it benefit partners in tangible ways?

Rob Nordby: The Elo Elite Partner Program is designed to reward and support our partners. It’s a tiered program where the more a partner sells, the better their discounts and rebates. But it’s not just about revenue—we also reward value-added services, training participation, and product engagement. We keep a clean channel and use deal registration to ensure partners can remain competitive. The goal is to build a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship.

Kate Orara: What are some common challenges manufacturers and channel partners face in building strong relationships, and how can they be addressed?

Rob Nordby: One big challenge is trust. Customers sometimes try to turn manufacturers and resellers against each other, which can create tension. Maintaining transparency, staying aligned, and working toward the same goal help mitigate those issues. Another challenge is competition and market consolidation, which can make it harder for smaller partners to compete. That’s why we advocate for a balanced channel approach.

Kate Orara: If you could change one thing about the channel today, what would it be and why?

Rob Nordby: I’d like to see less consolidation. The increasing number of mergers makes it difficult to maintain a diverse and competitive market. I also wish resellers would trust manufacturers more. We truly want to help them succeed, but sometimes there’s hesitation to share opportunities early on. Building trust through transparency is key.

Kate Orara: That’s a great perspective. Thank you, Rob, for sharing your insights! We’ll include your LinkedIn and contact details in the show notes for anyone who wants to connect.

Rob Nordby: Thanks for having me, Kate! This was fun. Looking forward to seeing you on the road.

Kate Orara: And that’s a wrap for this episode of the Rising Stars Podcast! A huge thanks to our listeners for tuning in and to our phenomenal guest for sharing his insights. • The Power of VARs: A Candid Conversation with POSGuys.com

The Power of VARs: A Candid Conversation with POSGuys.com

In the dynamic landscape of today’s business world, the decisions you make about the technology you buy, particularly point-of-sale (POS) technology, can either jumpstart your growth or add stumbling blocks to your success. With all the options available, many businesses are left pondering a critical question: Should you navigate the complexities of selecting technology on your own or consider partnering with a specialized intermediary like a Value-Added Reseller (VAR)?

To shed light on the critical role VARs play in providing merchants the technology they need (plus ongoing support and expertise), Christin Dorner, Content and Media Manager at Star, recently sat down with the Marketing Director at POSGuys.com, Colton Kaltenfeldt.

In this candid interview, Colton offers invaluable insights into the unique advantages of working with a VAR, the common pitfalls of taking shortcuts, and how VARs cultivate partnerships that benefit businesses in the long run.

Christin Dorner: Thanks for joining us today, Colton. It’s always a pleasure speaking with you. So, why don’t we begin by discussing the advantages of working with a VAR. Could you elaborate on why this route could be beneficial for businesses?

Colton Kaltenfeldt: Absolutely, Christin. Thank you for having me. I like to think of working with a VAR as embarking on an exploratory journey. Every business is different, and selling a one-size-fits-all solution is almost impossible. As VARs, we really get to the bottom of your unique pain points—some of which you might not even be aware of—because we’re trained to see where technology can offer solutions.

For instance, we have dedicated teams with compatibility sheets for software ranging from extensive systems like Square to more niche software solutions. When you work with a VAR, you’re not just buying a product; you’re getting expertise that could save you valuable time and money in the long run.

And finally, if you’re working with an established VAR, you’re usually working with a partner who can work with you as your operation and technology needs grow. The owner of a retail store running a single POS terminal might have no problem figuring everything out on their own. But once you introduce mobile computing, inventory and asset management software, e-commerce, and all the other technology that competitive retail stores look at nowadays, keeping everything straight can be difficult.

A good VAR will know how each of those pieces fit together and remove much of the stress.

    Happy Retail Business Owner Merchant

Christin: Yeah, that gets us right to my next question. How frequently do you encounter folks who initially opted for POS technology on an online marketplace only to realize they needed something different?

Colton: Oh, it’s a daily occurrence. We field 1-2 calls a day from people who thought they could take a shortcut by ordering something cheap from an online marketplace. They often find themselves stuck with a manual they can’t understand or a product that doesn’t do what they need it to.

The beauty of a VAR is that we don’t just sell you a product; we offer ongoing support. We are your partners in success. So when you hit a wall, we’re just a phone call away to help you climb over it.

Christin: What are the drawbacks you see when people decide to purchase from a marketplace?

Colton: When you buy from a marketplace, you’re taking a risk. You may receive a product that’s used or not quite what you were expecting. It might not even be compatible with your software. Marketplaces prioritize profits over support, so if you run into a snag, you’re mostly on your own.

With VARs, support isn’t an afterthought—it’s built into our business model. You get what you order, and you get a team that stands behind what they sell.

A VAR giving tech support to a business owner.

Christin: That makes a lot of sense. What about all the popular software apps businesses use? Could you talk a bit about the synergy between VARs and software providers like Square or DoorDash?

Colton: Sure, I’d love to. VARs often have direct partnerships with manufacturers and software providers, enabling us to be your go-between for custom solutions. Let’s say you’re a software company looking to integrate your application or a franchise wanting to roll out new tech. With our connections, we can expedite the process and even manage the whole project. This means that from consultation to deployment, you’ve got just one point of contact, making the process seamless.

Christin: That sounds incredibly advantageous. Do you have any examples where someone passed up going the VAR route, only to find themselves wishing they had?

Colton: Absolutely, I’ve got stories. We had one business owner who came to us in a panic. She had bought $4,000-$5,000 worth of POS equipment elsewhere. The software was mismatched, the hardware was a mess, and her store opening was just two weeks away.

We stepped in, reassessed her needs, and got her the proper setup. By the time she was ready to open, everything was functioning as it should, and she was incredibly relieved. That kind of turn-around is what VARs can offer.

Why Choose Star for Your POS Hardware?

Star Micronics proudly collaborates with the industry’s leading Value-Added Resellers (VARs) to deliver top-notch, tailor-made point-of-sale (POS) solutions that address your unique business needs. Discover why discerning business owners opt for Star hardware for unparalleled quality and seamless installation.

Christin: That’s quite a testimonial. She’s lucky she got your number! So, for those who are new to this, how can they go about finding a reputable VAR?

Colton: Manufacturer referrals can often point you in the right direction, but we also get a lot of traffic through the educational content on our website and YouTube channel. Word of mouth, though, that’s the gold standard. If you’re looking for a VAR, just ask around in your network. Someone you trust probably has a recommendation.

Thank you, Colton, for these valuable insights! Feel free to connect with Colton on LinkedIn. For more information on how VARs like POSGuys.com can benefit your business, click here.

  • Chowbus: Revolutionizing Asian Cuisine Delivery in the U.S.

Chowbus: Revolutionizing Asian Cuisine Delivery in the U.S.

Food delivery apps have emerged as game-changing platforms, reshaping the dynamics of dining and food consumption. Among these trailblazers is Chowbus, an app revolutionizing food delivery for Asian and prominently Chinese restaurants across the United States.

What sets Chowbus apart is its focus on underserved cuisines and smaller, family-run establishments, allowing them to reach a broader customer base while preserving their unique culinary identity.

Interested in integrating with Star Micronics?

We live in an age of convenience and digital integration, and Chowbus serves as an exceptional facilitator, connecting food lovers with authentic Asian eats. Yet, as with any technology-driven service, it can’t function in a vacuum. Online ordering apps like Chowbus underscore the necessity for more and more restaurants to have robust and reliable point-of-sale (POS) systems that manage transactions and keep up with this growing industry trend.

As an industry leader, Star Micronics offers impressive POS hardware that aligns perfectly with these needs, paving the way for seamless restaurant operations in the digital era.

A Niche Market Focus – Chowbus and Asian Cuisine

Chowbus has carved a distinctive niche in the food delivery app market by concentrating exclusively on Asian cuisine. By having a range of Asian restaurants on a single platform and allowing customers to order different items from multiple restaurants without any extra fees, Chowbus has simplified the process of exploring a variety of Asian food joints one at a time.

In doing so, this app not only bridges the gap between consumers craving authentic Asian food and smaller, local restaurants, but it also offers curated meal suggestions in select cities, further enhancing user experience. Plus, they offer same-day grocery delivery as well.

By strictly catering to the Asian community in cities around the U.S., Chowbus has carved itself out a nice slice of niche pie! In a world with so many options, focusing on a small market is often your best bet, especially in the restaurant industry.

    Embracing the Mobile Ordering Revolution

The rise of Chowbus coincides with a broader trend in the food industry: the surge in mobile and online ordering. Consumers appreciate the convenience and simplicity that apps like Chowbus provide, allowing them to browse menus, read reviews, and place orders—all from the comfort of their homes or offices.

Chowbus has embraced this trend and successfully catered to this digital preference. The app offers an intuitive user interface, making it easy for customers to navigate through different food options and place their orders in just a few taps. Mobile and online ordering are not going away, and it’s exciting to see how apps like Chowbus will continue to evolve.

Star Micronics – Complete POS Hardware Solutions

Many small-business restaurants struggle with growing too large for their operations at some point in their journeys. Especially when moving to online ordering platforms, orders can keep coming in but the way those orders get to the kitchen, make it into the delivery vehicle, and are paid for may be haphazard at best.

Sloppy operations can cause orders to come out incorrectly, which can be the cause of lost revenue and a lack of customer loyalty. While having a delivery platform like Chowbus helps indie restaurants reach wider audiences, ensuring the seamless management of day-to-day transactions is equally critical.

This is where quality POS hardware comes into play. Top-of-the-line equipment, like those provided by Star Micronics, ensures a secure, efficient, and reliable operational flow. When your restaurant has the proper hardware, online orders come in a rhythmic fashion. They’re delivered to the kitchen without issue, and everything is kept organized to make it to the customer in a timely manner.

Bagels n’ Cream Partners with KitchenHub and Star to Offer Streamlined Online Ordering and Delivery

Restaurant management knew they needed a solution to handle high customer demand.

    Software Isn’t Everything

As Chowbus continues to transform the Asian cuisine delivery experience in the U.S. (and Australia), its partnering restaurants must make sure they’re meeting the increased demand with confidence. Simply having your menu on food delivery apps is not enough to stay competitive. Restaurants must make sure they have the proper in-house hardware to handle the influx of online and mobile orders.

The continued rise of Chowbus and similar platforms asks restauranteurs to consider – are we positioned to take advantage of these sweeping changes? Embracing online ordering apps is just one piece of the puzzle. In an industry that sees near-constant change, are you equipped with the right tools and technologies to ensure seamless operations and excellent customer experience?

With online and mobile ordering apps, it is possible to boost your restaurant’s revenue immensely. Plenty of your competitors are doing just that. But you need to stay ahead of the curve and keep your customers coming back with great food and service. You can do so with the help of the Chowbus platform and apps like it, but also through the reliable operation of top-quality physical POS systems and hardware that connect the front of the house with the back in real-time.

Don’t miss out on all that online ordering can offer!
