Join me and the Star Micronics team as we innovate and rise together.

Welcome back to the Rising Stars Podcast, brought to you by Star Micronics. I’m Kate Orara, and before we dive into today’s exciting topic, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude. This is my final episode as your host of The Rising Stars Podcast, and it has truly been an incredible journey sharing industry insights with you all.

A huge thank you to Star Micronics for supporting me—I’ve truly enjoyed the chance to explore new technologies with channel friends and solo. I’ve never hosted a podcast before, and while I experienced some bumps, Star allowed me to find my way. I deeply appreciate the opportunity they gave me.

I also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to you, our dedicated listeners and viewers. Your feedback has helped guide me—from what you liked, didn’t like, and what you gained from the podcast. That insight has shaped my journey as host, and I’m so grateful.

While I may be signing off, the podcast isn’t going anywhere. Stay tuned for an exciting new format launching in the coming weeks!

Today, we’re talking about the power of POS scales and linerless labeling and how they’re transforming QSR (Quick Service Restaurant) delivery operations. Let’s dig in.

QSRs have changed dramatically over the past few years. While drive-thru and dine-in are still essential, delivery has skyrocketed. According to Mordor Intelligence, the global food delivery market is set to reach $1.37 trillion by 2029, growing at a 15.1% annual rate. That’s huge.

But as delivery grows, so does the challenge of ensuring order accuracy. Every QSR operator knows one of the biggest customer complaints is missing items—a burger left out, fries that never made it into the bag, or a forgotten drink. Let’s be honest: that kind of frustration can cost restaurants loyal customers and revenue.

Here’s a personal story—I went to a local restaurant for a pickup order. It wasn’t even for me, it was for my husband and kids. When I got home, some items were missing, including a salad. I had to go back to the restaurant, and when I did, I had to argue with the staff about whether I actually ordered the salad. It was extremely frustrating. I won’t be returning to that establishment again. (And yes, I left a Yelp review!)

So how can restaurants eliminate these kinds of errors and ensure every order is perfect?

Enter the point of sale scale.

These smart devices verify an order’s weight before it leaves the restaurant. Here’s how it works: each menu item has a predefined weight. When the order is packed, the scale checks the total weight. If something is missing, the system flags the discrepancy—before the bag even leaves the counter.

It’s the same concept as grocery store self-checkouts, where the system verifies the item based on weight. For QSRs, this simple but powerful tool reduces missing items and speeds up operations.

Now, order accuracy is just one part of the equation. What’s the next challenge? Order security.

No one wants to receive a delivery bag that looks tampered with. That’s where linerless labels come in. These tamper-proof, sticky labels seal delivery bags and give customers peace of mind that their food is safe, untouched, and fresh.

The benefits don’t stop there. Restaurants can print logos, promotions, or QR codes directly on the labels for added marketing impact. And unlike traditional labels, linerless labels eliminate waste from backing paper, making them a sustainable choice.

They also promote operational efficiency. Since linerless labels auto-cut to size, they streamline packaging, save time, and reduce material costs.

By combining POS scales with advanced labeling solutions, QSRs can:

    • Ensure every item is accounted for before the order leaves the kitchen
    • Protect food integrity with tamper-proof packaging
    • Enhance branding and customer trust with professional, informative labels
    • Reduce waste while boosting efficiency and sustainability

Star Micronics is leading the charge with cutting-edge solutions like the MGT POS Scales and the mC-Label3 multimedia printer, making accuracy and security seamless for QSR operators.

Well, that’s a wrap on today’s episode and my time as host of The Rising Stars Podcast. Once again, thank you so much to Star Micronics and to all of you who have tuned in, engaged, and shared your thoughts along the way.

Welcome back to another episode of Rising Stars Podcast! I’m your host, Kate Orara, and I’m really excited for today’s discussion. I have a good friend and industry partner with me—Paul Leduc, CEO of Globe POS. Paul, how are you?

Paul Leduc: I’m great! How are you? Nice to see you again.

Kate Orara: Good to see you too! I’m super excited for today’s conversation. We had a call a couple of weeks ago that really inspired this topic, and I knew we had to bring it to the podcast. We’re talking about something near and dear to my heart—extended service warranties. I have experience in the services industry, working in warranty and non-warranty repair, so I know firsthand how important this topic is.

But before we dive in, I’d love for you to introduce yourself to our listeners. Tell us a little about your experience in the channel and about Globe POS.

Paul Leduc: Sure! I’ve been in the industry for a long time. I started in a software company as a dealer rep across North America, working with a variety of VARs of different sizes and focuses. Before that, I owned a grocery store, so I understand the retail environment firsthand. Over the years, I worked with different dealerships across different states and provinces. About 15 years ago, I decided to acquire Globe POS Systems because I wanted something stable and closer to home while staying active in the industry.

To stay connected, I’ve remained involved in the RSPA (Retail Solutions Providers Association), serving on the board and keeping my ears on the ground for industry trends. I love engaging with resellers and partners and providing assistance wherever I can.

Kate Orara: That’s great! Yes, we both have been involved with RSPA, and it’s such a fantastic organization. If any listeners have questions about RSPA, Paul and I are happy to help!

Now, let’s dive into today’s topic: extended warranties. Our conversation a few weeks ago was about how Globe POS successfully incorporates extended warranties into its overall solution and how that has helped your business. To start, what inspired Globe POS to offer extended warranties on point-of-sale hardware, and how does this address common customer pain points?

Paul Leduc: Years ago, manufacturers didn’t always offer extended warranties, and as a smaller VAR, that posed challenges. We wanted to grow beyond our immediate region while still offering high-level service, but the logistics were difficult. I remember flying out on a Sunday night to replace a hard drive for a customer, which was expensive and time-consuming.

Without extended warranties, service and replacement costs could quickly add up for both us and our customers. It became clear that offering extended service plans was the best way to provide cost-effective, scalable support. When manufacturers started offering warranty add-ons more actively about eight years ago, we fully embraced it. Now, we can ensure that even customers in remote locations get the same level of service and peace of mind.

Kate Orara: That makes so much sense. Having a warranty in place removes a lot of uncertainty for customers and prevents unexpected expenses.

What are some of the key benefits for merchants who opt for extended warranties on their POS hardware? How do these warranties contribute to overall business continuity and cost savings?

Paul Leduc: Beyond peace of mind, the cost savings are significant. One repair on a critical component like a scanner or cash drawer can be costly. Having a warranty means that rather than paying for an expensive repair or replacement, businesses are covered.

Another benefit is faster service. If a business encounters an issue, they have a dedicated support line to troubleshoot first. Many times, it’s a simple fix—like pressing a reset button—but without support, the customer might have sent the unit in for repair, leading to unnecessary downtime.

Extended warranties also ensure that businesses stay operational. If a POS terminal goes down, sales stop, and that’s lost revenue. For industries like hospitality and restaurants, where peak hours are critical, having warranty-backed support can mean the difference between minimal disruption and a full-blown crisis.

Kate Orara: Absolutely! When I worked in services, restaurants would call us in a panic if their systems went down during the dinner rush. Having that warranty-backed support helped them get back up and running quickly.

What are some of the most common POS hardware failures, and how do extended warranties help mitigate these challenges?

Paul Leduc: It really depends on the environment. In restaurants, touchscreens take a lot of wear and tear—grease, spills, and heavy use can lead to dead zones or calibration issues. In retail, the biggest issues tend to be scanners, cash drawers, and occasionally printers.

Having an extended warranty means businesses don’t have to worry about costly repairs. If a scanner is dropped or a cord is damaged, they can quickly get a replacement without extra expenses. It ensures minimal downtime and maintains business continuity.

Kate Orara: That makes sense. Now, let’s talk about how extended warranties work with Star Micronics printers and other hardware. What should businesses know about coverage, response times, and maintenance support?

Paul Leduc: Star Micronics is one of the easiest manufacturers to work with when it comes to extended warranties. The process is simple—when we sell a new printer, we can add the warranty with just a quick call. No complicated paperwork.

If an issue arises, Star provides advanced exchange services. They’ll ship a replacement printer, and the customer just sends the faulty one back. Most issues, however, are solved over the phone. Instead of directing us to a knowledge base, Star’s team actually helps troubleshoot in real time, which saves a lot of frustration.

Kate Orara: That hands-on support is invaluable. As technology continues to evolve, how do you see the role of extended warranties changing in the POS industry?

Paul Leduc: While POS hardware itself is fairly stable, extended warranties will become even more important as businesses rely more on these devices. Many businesses keep their hardware for five to ten years, so offering a long-term warranty makes sense.

The future changes in POS are happening more on the software side with AI and advanced analytics, but hardware remains the foundation of operations. Ensuring longevity and reliability through extended warranties will always be a smart investment.

Kate Orara: Absolutely! Before we wrap up, here’s a curveball question I ask all my guests: If you could change one thing about the channel today, what would it be and why?

Paul Leduc: I’d like to see more manufacturers commit fully to either channel sales or direct sales, rather than doing both. The channel has proven its value, and companies that truly invest in it see long-term success. While some direct sales efforts still exist, I think the channel is in a better position today than it was a decade ago.

Kate Orara: That’s a great perspective. Thank you so much for joining me today, Paul! How can listeners reach out to you if they want to learn more about Globe POS?

Paul Leduc: You can visit our website at globpos.ca for more information.

Kate Orara: Perfect! Thank you again, Paul. I really appreciate your time and insights.

Kate Orara: Hey there, retail tech enthusiasts! Welcome to the Rising Stars Podcast, your go-to for all things retail tech and point of sale. I’m Kate Orara, Partner Development Manager at Star Micronics, and I’m excited to guide you through this journey. Here, we dive into the latest innovations shaping the retail, hospitality, and cannabis industries. So whether you’re a techie or a business owner, this is your backstage pass to insider knowledge. Join me and the Star Micronics team as we innovate and rise together.

Today, we’re diving into an exciting topic that’s all about modernizing the way we do business—the move to cloud-based point-of-sale (POS) systems. Whether you’re a reseller or an independent software vendor (ISV), helping your end users understand the value of moving their POS to the cloud can be a game-changer, not just for their business but for yours too. So, let’s unpack this topic with an upbeat, practical lens.

    Accessibility and Flexibility

Here’s the deal: cloud-based POS systems act like the ultimate remote control for business operations. With just an internet connection, business owners can manage sales, track inventory, and even oversee employee performance—no matter where they are.

Think about it: a business owner could be at the beach (lucky them!) or visiting another store location, and they can still pull up real-time sales data on their smartphone or tablet. It’s like having their entire business in their back pocket. That level of flexibility isn’t just a perk—it’s a necessity in today’s fast-paced retail world.

For resellers and ISVs, this is a golden selling point. You’re not just pitching software; you’re offering freedom and control.

    Operational Efficiency

Cloud-based systems simplify many day-to-day processes, making them incredibly efficient for end users. Here’s an example: instead of manually updating inventory across multiple stores or platforms, a cloud system updates everything in real time. One click, and boom—inventory is synced. No spreadsheets, no guesswork, no headaches.

What about software updates? Traditional POS systems often require manual updates, leading to downtime. With the cloud, updates happen automatically behind the scenes, ensuring no disruption to business operations. It’s seamless.

As a reseller or ISV, you can confidently position cloud-based systems as tools that make life easier for end users. When businesses operate more efficiently, they grow faster, and that success reflects back on you as a trusted advisor.

    Packaging the Benefits for Customers

So, how do you package these benefits into a compelling message for your customers? Here’s the win-win scenario you can paint for the business owner: Moving to a cloud-based POS means they gain freedom, speed, and peace of mind. For you, the reseller or ISV, it’s an opportunity to build deeper relationships, drive recurring revenue through subscriptions, and help your customers stay ahead of the curve.

This isn’t just about selling technology; it’s about being a partner in growth.

When Cloud-Based POS Might Not Be Ideal

Now, before we wrap up, let’s address a common question: Are there businesses where a cloud-based POS might not be the ideal solution? The short answer: yes. While cloud-based systems offer significant benefits, they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution.

Here are a few scenarios where they may not be the best fit:

    • Businesses in areas with unreliable internet: While many systems offer offline modes, consistent connectivity is essential to fully leverage the benefits of the cloud. In such cases, a hybrid system or a traditional locally hosted POS might be a better choice.
    • Specialized software or hardware requirements: Certain manufacturing businesses or highly specialized retail environments may use equipment or workflows that require older, on-premise systems.
    • Small businesses with minimal transactions: While cloud-based POS systems often have a lower total cost of ownership, very small businesses with extremely low transaction volumes may find subscription costs unnecessary compared to basic cash registers or standalone systems.

As resellers and ISVs, your role is to guide end users toward the best solution for their unique situation. Ask thoughtful questions about their infrastructure, location, and operational needs. If a cloud-based system isn’t right for them, they’ll appreciate your honesty, and that trust can lead to future opportunities.

    Final Thoughts

To wrap things up, remember: cloud-based POS systems bring tremendous value, but they’re not the answer for every business. Knowing when and why to recommend or not recommend them is what will set you apart as a trusted advisor.

Thank you for tuning in to this episode of the Rising Stars Podcast! If you found today’s discussion valuable, share it with a colleague or post it on your socials. Let’s keep these conversations going! And if you’ve got more questions about cloud-based POS, reach out to me or the team at Star. I’d love to hear from you.

Welcome back to another episode of the Rising Stars Podcast! I’m really excited today because I have one of my old buddies joining me. I know I keep saying this, but truly, the guests I bring on provide valuable insights into this industry—I promise it’s not just me bringing on friends for fun! Today, I have my good friend Rob Nordby from Elo Touch Solutions with me. Rob, how are you?

Rob Nordby: I’m doing well! Thanks for having me. Excited to be here.

Kate Orara: Awesome! I’m happy you could join us today. I know you’re traveling and actually at a conference right now, so I really appreciate you taking the time to speak with me.

Rob Nordby: No worries! Excuse the background noise—I’ll just annoy everyone around me here. But let’s do it! Ready to rock.

Kate Orara: Well, it’s funny because you’re currently at a partner event, and today we’re talking about partnerships! To kick things off, for our listeners who may not be familiar with you or Elo, could you give us a brief introduction about yourself and your role?

Rob Nordby: Absolutely! I’m Rob Nordby, and I’ve been with Elo for six years. I manage our national solution provider team and programs, working with large national partners like CDW, SHI, and Insight. It’s a small but nimble team. Before Elo, I spent almost seven years at Zebra and started my career at PC Mall, which is now Insight. I’ve had a variety of roles in the industry, but my primary focus has always been on the channel, managing relationships and long-term partnerships.

Kate Orara: That’s great! You’ve worked at the manufacturer level and the reseller level. Have you worked at the distributor level as well?

Rob Nordby: That’s actually the one part of the industry I haven’t worked in, but I work closely with distribution. I have great relationships with our distributors and always advocate for collaboration between manufacturers, distributors, and resellers. Even though I’ve never worked for a distributor, I feel like I have offices at many of them!

Kate Orara: That makes sense! So, let’s talk about partnerships. What are some key traits or behaviors you look for in a successful channel partner?

Rob Nordby: Great question! A successful partner is motivated and truly embraces the term “partner.” Transparency and goal alignment are huge. Whether a partner is small or large, if we establish a long-term plan and stick to it, that makes for a great relationship. We love investing in partners who are committed to working toward mutual success.

Kate Orara: From a partner’s perspective, what should they expect in terms of support, resources, and communication from a manufacturer like Elo?

Rob Nordby: Honesty is number one. We all know about channel conflict, but maintaining a clean channel is a priority for Elo. Partners should expect reliable products, transparency about where our solutions work best, and clear guidance. We don’t just push products; we help partners find the right solutions for their customers. When manufacturers and resellers work together with honesty and a shared goal, it leads to successful rollouts and strong relationships.

Kate Orara: Speaking of rollouts, how do you involve partners in launching new products, and what are some best practices for ensuring a smooth rollout?

Rob Nordby: We prioritize roadmaps. Communication is key—we make sure partners are informed well in advance about what’s coming. Training is also essential. With large-scale rollouts, like those for Walmart or Target, understanding needs upfront and sharing that information between manufacturers and resellers prevents surprises down the road. Bringing partners in from day one creates a cohesive strategy and minimizes issues later.

Kate Orara: That makes so much sense! So, tell us about the Elo Elite Partner Program. How does it benefit partners in tangible ways?

Rob Nordby: The Elo Elite Partner Program is designed to reward and support our partners. It’s a tiered program where the more a partner sells, the better their discounts and rebates. But it’s not just about revenue—we also reward value-added services, training participation, and product engagement. We keep a clean channel and use deal registration to ensure partners can remain competitive. The goal is to build a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship.

Kate Orara: What are some common challenges manufacturers and channel partners face in building strong relationships, and how can they be addressed?

Rob Nordby: One big challenge is trust. Customers sometimes try to turn manufacturers and resellers against each other, which can create tension. Maintaining transparency, staying aligned, and working toward the same goal help mitigate those issues. Another challenge is competition and market consolidation, which can make it harder for smaller partners to compete. That’s why we advocate for a balanced channel approach.

Kate Orara: If you could change one thing about the channel today, what would it be and why?

Rob Nordby: I’d like to see less consolidation. The increasing number of mergers makes it difficult to maintain a diverse and competitive market. I also wish resellers would trust manufacturers more. We truly want to help them succeed, but sometimes there’s hesitation to share opportunities early on. Building trust through transparency is key.

Kate Orara: That’s a great perspective. Thank you, Rob, for sharing your insights! We’ll include your LinkedIn and contact details in the show notes for anyone who wants to connect.

Rob Nordby: Thanks for having me, Kate! This was fun. Looking forward to seeing you on the road.

Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s been on the minds of many resellers, ISVs, distributors, and hardware manufacturers: how can we prepare for potential changes under the new United States administration? Before we get started, I want to emphasize that this discussion will remain non-political. My goal is to provide you with practical strategies and considerations to help your business navigate any upcoming changes, regardless of the political climate.

Let’s dive in. I want to cover this topic in eight segments: understanding the landscape, staying informed, assessing supply chains, financial impacts, supporting customers, strengthening partnerships, investing in technology, and legal considerations.

    Understanding the Landscape

As administrations change, so do policies that impact international trade. While specific details about proposed tariffs are still emerging, history tells us that tariffs can directly affect supply chains, pricing, and overall business operations in the retail channel. It’s crucial to stay informed and proactive.

    Staying Informed

You’re already doing the first step—staying informed. Keep an eye on announcements from government agencies and industry associations. Organizations like the Retail Solutions Providers Association (RSPA), of which Star Micronics is a member, are excellent resources for timely updates. If you’re not a member, let me know—I’m happy to connect you with someone who can help you join.

Joining groups like RSPA and subscribing to their newsletters can give you a head start on understanding proposed tariffs. Networking with industry peers can also provide insights and opportunities to collaborate on solutions.

    Assessing Supply Chains

Take a close look at your supply chain. Identify which of your products or components could be affected by tariffs. If you’re sourcing items from regions likely to face new duties, now’s the time to explore alternatives or have those discussions. Consider working with suppliers in unaffected regions or exploring domestic manufacturing options. Additionally, renegotiate contracts with your current suppliers to share or absorb potential cost increases.

    Financial Impacts

Tariffs can significantly impact your bottom line, so it’s essential to prepare financially. Start by estimating how proposed tariffs might increase costs for your key products. From there, consider strategies to adjust pricing while remaining competitive. You might also explore financial tools like hedging or insurance to protect against cost volatility. For businesses that rely heavily on imports, these tools can provide a much-needed safety net.

    Supporting Customers

Don’t forget about your customers—communication is key. Be transparent about potential impacts on pricing or product availability. At the same time, offer alternatives. If a product’s cost rises significantly due to tariffs, suggest lower-cost options or locally sourced solutions. Always emphasize the value of your offerings, whether that’s long-term ROI, reliability, or customer support.

    Strengthening Partnerships

Strong partnerships can make all the difference during times of uncertainty. Collaborate with your manufacturers, distributors, and other partners to develop strategies for mitigating tariff impacts. For example, you might work together to build up inventory before tariffs take effect or share the burden of increased costs. Additionally, consider advocating as a group for tariff exemptions or relief—a collective voice often carries more weight.

    Investing in Technology

Another way to offset potential tariff impacts is by investing in technology. Automation and efficiency tools can reduce operational costs, helping to balance out higher import expenses. Similarly, exploring localized production can reduce reliance on imports altogether. For some businesses, now might be the time to reevaluate your product strategy entirely. Shifting focus to high-margin products or services can help you absorb cost increases more effectively.

    Legal Considerations

Finally, don’t overlook legal and compliance aspects. Consult with legal experts to understand how tariffs may impact your contracts and compliance requirements. Review tariff codes for your products to ensure proper classification and avoid unnecessary duties.

    Closing Thoughts

Preparing for potential tariffs isn’t just about mitigating risks; it’s also about finding opportunities to innovate and strengthen your business. By staying informed, assessing your supply chain, and collaborating with partners, you can navigate these changes with confidence. Remember, change is constant in the retail IT channel, and adapting proactively is what sets successful businesses apart.

Exploring the Future of Shopping with Virtual Try-Ons and AI Smart Carts

In this episode of the Rising Stars Podcast, “The Future of Shopping: Virtual Try-Ons and AI Smart Carts,” host Kate Orara discusses two groundbreaking innovations that are transforming the retail landscape, giving examples of them in action.

With her expertise as Star Micronics’ Partner Development Manager, Kate explores how Goddiva’s partnership with Zyler brings virtual try-on technology to online shopping, while Intermarché’s collaboration with Shopic and Capgemini introduces AI-powered smart carts to grocery stores.

This episode highlights how these technologies are reshaping the customer experience, reducing friction in both online and in-store shopping, and creating new opportunities for retailers to engage their audiences in more personalized and efficient ways.

The Future of Shopping Starts Here

Virtual try-on technology by Zyler is a game-changer for e-commerce. By allowing shoppers to see how clothing looks on their own body, this innovation bridges the gap between online and in-store experiences, boosting customer confidence and reducing returns.

Today, we’re diving into two amazing stories that showcase the power of partnerships in reshaping customer experiences. First, we’ll explore how Goddiva, a standout in the fashion world, is teaming up with Zyler to revolutionize online shopping with virtual try-on technology. Then we’ll head to France, where Intermarché is piloting AI-powered smart carts with Shopic and Capgemini. So grab your coffee or your notepad—this is going to be a fun episode!

All right, let’s start with Goddiva and Zyler’s virtual try-on technology. Goddiva is a fashion brand that’s setting a new standard for online shopping. If you’ve ever shopped for clothes online, you know the struggle—or at least my fellow ladies do. Maybe guys do too, but for me as a female, it’s always a struggle. Does it fit? How will it look on me? Well, Goddiva has partnered with Zyler to solve this problem with virtual try-on technology. Zyler lets shoppers upload a photo to see how different outfits will look on their own body. It’s personalized, intuitive, and quite frankly, could be a game-changer for Goddiva.

This isn’t just about reducing returns—though that’s going to be a huge plus. It’s about giving customers confidence in their purchases and creating a more engaging, enjoyable shopping experience. Now think about what this means for the broader retail landscape. As e-commerce continues to grow, tools like Zyler’s can be key differentiators. They bridge the gap between physical and digital shopping, blending convenience with personalization. And let’s not overlook how this benefits resellers and tech providers. By aligning with brands like Zyler, you can offer solutions that make online shopping smarter, more interactive, and customer-centric.

Now, I did get to actually play around on the Zyler website, which was kind of fun. While the concept is good, I think there are some tweaks that need to happen. I was able to plug in my height and weight, but I had to use toggle bars to give other details about my physique, like shoulder width, waist size, chest, and hips. If I had to make a suggestion, I would provide both options: keep the toggle bars, but also give consumers the opportunity to input actual measurements in inches or centimeters. Maybe the technology isn’t there yet, but it’s something to consider. Personally, I’d be more willing to purchase items if I knew for sure they’d look the way I expect based on my actual measurements rather than guessing with the toggle bars. Just my two cents!

All right, moving from online to in-store, let’s talk about Intermarché, one of France’s largest grocery chains. They’ve partnered with Shopic and Capgemini to bring AI-powered smart carts to life. These smart carts are incredible. Imagine walking into a store, grabbing a cart, and as you add items, the cart instantly recognizes what you’ve picked up. It also tracks your total, eliminates the need for checkout lines, and can even suggest promotions or recipes based on what you’ve selected.

What I love about this story is how it enhances the in-store experience without complicating it. It’s simple for shoppers yet loaded with advanced AI and real-time analytics. I haven’t seen these carts in person, but I’ve seen similar concepts, like bins that calculate your total. What’s really cool about these carts is the running total feature—you can see the “damage” to your wallet as you go. Plus, the inspiration for recipes based on your selected items is a huge win. It helps prevent shoppers from forgetting items while in the store, which is a consumer win, and it encourages them to purchase more, which is a win for the store. This could be a real revenue generator for Intermarché.

This is a leap forward in customer convenience and engagement, but there’s a deeper impact here. Retailers gain insights into shopper behavior, allowing them to refine product placement, inventory, and even marketing strategies. For resellers and technology providers, the lesson is clear: innovation sells. These smart carts demonstrate how combining AI with everyday shopping can drive efficiency and delight customers.

And that’s a wrap on today’s episode. From Gadiva’s virtual try-on revolution with Zyler to Intermarché’s AI-powered smart carts, we’re seeing how technology and partnerships are rewriting the rules of retail. Thank you for tuning in to this episode of the Rising Stars Podcast. If you’ve enjoyed this episode, please be sure to subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review—it means the world to us. Here, we dive into the latest innovations shaping the retail, hospitality, and cannabis industries. So whether you’re a techie or a business owner, this is your backstage pass to insider knowledge. Join me and the Star Micronics team as we innovate and rise together.

Today, we’re diving into a topic that might not sound exciting at first, but trust me—if you’re a reseller in the retail technology space, this is something you need to know. We’re talking about California’s Proposition 65, also known as Prop 65. Don’t hit pause or exit just yet! Please give me a little bit of your time. This isn’t just about regulations—it’s about protecting your business, your customers, and, let’s be honest, your bottom line.

By the end of this episode, you’ll have a clear understanding of what Prop 65 is, why it matters to you as a reseller, and how you can stay compliant with both old and new rules. I’ll even share a great resource from Star Micronics that breaks it all down for you. So grab your coffee, settle in, and let’s get started!

All right, what is Proposition 65? Let’s start with the basics. Prop 65 is a California law that’s been around since 1986. Its goal? To protect the public from chemicals that can cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Now, what does that mean for businesses? If a product you sell contains one of the chemicals on California’s Prop 65 list, you’re required to provide a clear warning to your customers. Think of it as California’s way of saying, “Transparency is key!”

But here’s the kicker: that list isn’t static. It’s updated annually, and as of now, it includes over 900 chemicals.

If you’re a reseller, you might be thinking, “Well, I don’t manufacture the products, so this isn’t my problem.” Wrong! It is your problem because you’re the one putting these products into the hands of your end-users. If the products you sell don’t meet Prop 65 requirements, you could face hefty fines or even lawsuits.

For example, one area of concern is receipt paper. Did you know that some thermal receipt papers contain BPA, a chemical on the Prop 65 list? If your end-users are unaware of this, it could spell trouble not just for them but for you, too.

All right, so there have been some new updates to Prop 65. BPA has been a hot topic lately, especially in the context of receipt paper. Manufacturers are now producing BPA-free alternatives, but it’s up to resellers like you to ensure your inventory aligns with these changes. Another update is how warnings are delivered. It’s no longer enough to have vague, generic labels—the warnings must be specific about the chemical and the potential harm.

To my resellers, what does this all mean for you? Here’s the game plan, and it’s a four-step process:

    1. Audit Your Inventory: Take stock of what you’re selling. If any of your products contain Prop 65-listed chemicals, make sure you know which ones.

    2. Work with Manufacturers: Stay in close communication with your suppliers. Ask for documentation that confirms compliance with Prop 65.

    3. Label Clearly: Remember, transparency is key. If a product requires a warning, make sure it’s properly labeled before it reaches your customers.

    4. Educate Your Team and Customers: Make sure your sales team understands these requirements, and don’t hesitate to pass that knowledge on to your end-users.

Now, I know this sounds like a lot, but you’re not in this alone. The team at Star Micronics has put together a fantastic blog post that dives into Prop 65 compliance, particularly when it comes to receipt paper. So definitely read it when you have a minute. You can find it in the description notes of this episode, or simply go to Star’s website, navigate to the resources tab, and select the Star POS Blog. Star explains the regulations in plain English and even offers tips on managing BPA-free inventory.

Compliance with Prop 65 might feel like a hassle, but think of it as an investment in your business. By staying ahead of these regulations, you’re not just protecting yourself—you’re building trust with your customers and showing them that you care about their safety. So take the time to review your processes, educate your team, and use resources like the Star blog to guide you.

So, whether you’re a techie or a business owner, this is your backstage pass to insider knowledge. Join me and the Star Micronics team as we innovate and rise together.

Welcome back to the Rising Stars Podcast. I’m your host, Kate Orara, Partner Development Manager at Star Micronics.

Today, we’re talking about a topic that’s essential for independent software vendors (ISVs) and resellers looking to partner with point-of-sale manufacturers. Specifically, we’ll cover my top three tips for channel partners and what they should look for when choosing a partner, such as Star Micronics.

This choice can shape everything—from how well the software integrates with hardware to how effectively you can grow and scale your business.

The inspiration for this episode actually came from a meeting I recently attended through the Retail Solutions Providers Association (RSPA). As many of you know, RSPA hosts amazing community-focused events. This particular meeting, led by Jim Roddy and Ashley Naggy, was typically exclusive to software developers. However, because the topic was partnerships, I was invited to join.

Partnerships are something I’m passionate about, so of course, I jumped at the opportunity to participate.

Before we dive into the details, if you’re not currently an RSPA member and are interested in joining this incredible community, feel free to reach out to me via LinkedIn or email me at korara@starmicronics.com. I’ll be happy to connect you with their team!

    All right, let’s get started.

Tip #1: Hardware and Software Integration Support

This is absolutely critical when evaluating potential POS partners. You want to ensure they offer robust development tools like APIs, SDKs, and ideally some cloud-based options. These tools make integration smoother and more efficient.

Star Micronics, for instance, is renowned for providing developer resources that help ISVs connect their software seamlessly with devices like printers, cash drawers, and other POS peripherals.

Beyond the initial setup, ongoing technical support is key. You don’t want to be stuck in a situation where something’s not working and you have no one to turn to.

A great partner should have a dedicated support team ready to assist with technical challenges. This level of support is a game-changer when delivering reliable solutions to your end users.

Tip #2: Joint Marketing and Sales Opportunities

A partnership with a POS manufacturer should go beyond just technology. Ideally, it’s an opportunity to expand your reach and visibility.

Many hardware companies, including Star, offer co-marketing initiatives where you can collaborate on events, case studies, and product launches. By working together, you’re not only promoting your products but also building credibility and expanding your customer base.

Another significant advantage is access to the manufacturer’s reseller network. For example, Star has a robust network of resellers and distributors. Partnering with a manufacturer that has established channels opens up opportunities to reach new markets and customers, helping you grow faster.

    Tip #3: Innovation and Future-Proofing

We all know tech moves fast, so having a partner who invests in innovation is crucial.

Whether it’s mobile point-of-sale, cloud printing, or new IoT capabilities, you want a manufacturer that stays ahead of the curve. Star, for instance, has a reputation for focusing on innovation, ensuring that ISVs work with hardware that remains relevant and ready for the future.

Scalability is also essential. As your business grows, you need hardware that can grow with you. Whether your customers are small businesses or larger enterprises, choosing a partner with adaptable solutions helps you avoid costly upgrades down the line.

    In Summary
So, there you have it—my top three tips for ISVs when choosing a POS manufacturing partner:

    • Integration and Support
    • Joint Marketing and Reseller Access
    • Commitment to Innovation

A strong partnership in these areas can make all the difference in helping your software reach new heights.

Thank you for tuning in to this episode of the Rising Stars Podcast. If you enjoyed this episode, please like it, share it, and don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss any of our informative episodes.

Here, we dive into the latest innovations shaping the retail, hospitality, and cannabis industries. So, whether you’re a techie or a business owner, this is your backstage pass to insider knowledge. Join me and the Star Micronics team as we innovate and rise together.

Welcome to another episode of the Rising Stars podcast brought to you by Star Micronics. I’m your host, Kate Orara, Partner Development Manager at Star, and today we’re going to talk about something I’m very passionate about—partnerships. Whether you’re a reseller or an independent software vendor, choosing your partnerships with a hardware manufacturer is a critical process. And why shouldn’t it be like dating a potential life partner? You’re looking for something similar in the professional space, and you really want to make the best decision for your business.

I have previously recorded my tips for ISVs and resellers, which we’ll link in the show notes. But in a nutshell, you want a hardware partner who provides support, creates opportunities, and continues to provide innovative solutions for you and your customers. One of the key things that resellers and ISVs undervalue or overlook are the partner programs their potential hardware partner offers, if any. The right partner program through a hardware manufacturer can make all the difference in your business’s success.

Today, we’re diving into the essential qualities to look for when considering a partner program. I’ll be sharing my tips on identifying a program that fits your needs, helps you stay competitive, and ultimately boosts your bottom line.

The first thing I want to cover is the easy onboarding and accessibility. A standout partner program will have a seamless onboarding process. The best programs should allow you to get up and running quickly with minimal paperwork. Look for programs that keep registration straightforward—no commitments, no minimum orders, no upfront costs. Programs like this enable you to start accessing benefits immediately without the hurdles.

Another crucial element is generous discounts. A partner program that values its partners will provide immediate cost savings to its resellers and ISVs. This could include discounts on hardware purchases or exclusive deals from authorized distributors. The financial flexibility allows you to scale with fewer risks and better margins.

Next on the list is marketing and integration support. This goes beyond the discounts. An effective partner program should provide marketing materials, integration support, and even offer demo units to help you sell effectively. This kind of support is key to positioning your business as a trusted provider of top-tier solutions. It’s about giving you the tools to stand out, showcase products with confidence, and address your customer needs more effectively.

Training is another big one. I think people overlook this so drastically. Training resources and access to a portal with self-service options can be game changers. Programs that prioritize training and provide partners with hands-on demo units foster deeper knowledge of the hardware. You’ll also want priority access to new products, so you’re always equipped with the latest technology for your clients.

Now, let’s talk about support. Look for programs with dedicated support teams. A specialist who can help you familiarize yourself with your dashboard and guide you through the partner portal can save you time and prevent issues down the line. This is especially helpful for those first few weeks when you’re learning the ropes. Also, having somebody to go to whenever there is an issue—maybe there’s a glitch in the portal, or you have a question about a product, and you just need that trusted advisor—you need to have a dedicated specialist to work with.

Finally, let’s talk about long-term profitability. A quality partner program should support you for long-term growth. For instance, some programs offer the ability to register special projects or access new revenue streams through trade show sponsorships or special projects. The goal is a program that evolves with your business rather than one that only meets short-term needs.

To recap, when evaluating a hardware manufacturer’s partner program, prioritize the ease of onboarding, immediate financial benefits, strong marketing and integration support, hands-on training, dedicated support, and long-term profitability. These are all the hallmarks of a program that can provide true value to your business.

If you’re considering partnering with a new hardware manufacturer, remember to evaluate these factors carefully. The right program can truly empower your business to thrive in today’s competitive market.

    Kate Orara:
Hey there, retail tech enthusiasts! Welcome to the Rising Stars podcast, your go-to source for all things retail tech and point of sale. I’m Kate Orara, Partner Development Manager at Star Micronics, and I’m excited to guide you through this journey. Here, we dive into the latest innovations shaping the retail, hospitality, and cannabis industries. So, whether you’re a techie or a business owner, this is your backstage pass to insider knowledge. Join me and the Star Micronics team as we innovate and rise together.

    Kate Orara:
Welcome back to another episode of the Rising Stars podcast! I’m really excited about today’s episode because I’m joined by a good friend in the industry, James Korte. If you’re watching, you already know who that is. And if you’re listening, you’re about to find out! James is the Director of Marketing at Blue Star. Is that recent? I mean, you just got promoted to Director, right, James?

    James Korte:
I did, yes! It was a big moment. I’m terrible with dates, but I think it’s been about five months now—though it could be closer to a year. Time flies! But yes, it’s still fresh and very exciting. I’ve been in this industry for over ten years now, mainly in retail and hospitality technology. Blue Star is a large distributor, so we touch on pretty much every industry from a technology standpoint. I feel like people in this space are fascinated by the industry. I started as a designer, then moved into marketing, and now, here I am! And, Kate, when you messaged me about coming on the podcast and said, “Let’s talk about your favorite thing,” I didn’t even need clarification—I knew what you meant!

    Kate Orara:
Yes! And I think we share a similar perspective. We’re both Millennials, so we really experienced the digital shift. I remember when Facebook first launched, and you needed a college email to join. I friended everyone because I wanted to have as many friends as possible! Our generation really pushed digital marketing forward.

    James Korte:
Absolutely! Millennials really ushered in the digital era. I spent the first 13 years of my life without the internet, and then, suddenly, the world opened up. It changed everything for us. And yes, Zuckerberg, a fellow Millennial, created Facebook. So, here we are, a generation that has one foot in the “real” world and another online.

    Kate Orara:
We could probably do a whole other podcast on the generational topic! I did one recently on marketing to Gen Z with Tyler Wells from MicroTouch. That could be another part two we dive into later.

    Kate Orara:
So, moving into the focus of today’s episode: digital marketing. I know LinkedIn is a central platform in our industry. What’s one digital marketing trend you’re excited about that the channel hasn’t fully embraced yet?

    James Korte:
Great question! I’d say the trend I’m most excited about, which the channel is a bit slow to adopt, is entertainment as a marketing strategy. A lot of younger generations realize that interrupting a social media feed with a super buttoned-up, product-centric message doesn’t work as well anymore. The key is engaging your audience purely for the sake of engagement. I know some people think, “Why would I do that? I’m here to grow my business!” But if you’re constantly boring people, they’ll stop paying attention when you actually have something important to share.

There’s also an algorithmic element to it—if you spend time being generally entertaining and helpful, your business-related posts are more likely to reach people when the time is right. I think the channel needs to embrace micro-influencers, too. Even though these might not be huge celebrities, they’re influential in specific verticals. We tried an offering last year where vendors could hire someone on Cameo to give them a shoutout. It worked well and gave us a taste of influencer marketing. The point is, if you create fun and engaging content, people will stay tuned in for when you do share something business-relevant.

    Kate Orara:
I couldn’t agree more! You actually did something fun at Retail Now—it was like an “Olympics,” and I remember there was a “flex off.” That kind of engagement shows personality, which people love. We’re people working for companies, and it’s so important to show that human side.

    Kate Orara:
So, as the Director of Marketing, what’s your favorite digital marketing campaign you’ve ever worked on, or that someone else created, and why did it stand out?

    James Korte:
I’ll share two examples. One of our own, which wasn’t groundbreaking but was successful, and then one I just admire. First, we ran a campaign in late 2023 for an emerging tech vendor, Loop, an EV charging company. We targeted Wyndham property owners with a three-pronged approach: physical direct mail, meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads, and outbound telemarketing. We made it highly targeted to Wyndham, which resonated really well. The response was fantastic—28 people requested site visits, and it generated a few million dollars in revenue. It was successful because it was so targeted, and we connected with people in the way they preferred.

The other example is from a brand called Liquid Death. They make canned water, but it’s branded like a heavy metal album. Their tagline was “Murder Your Thirst,” and their ad campaigns were edgy—they even did a video where someone was waterboarded with Liquid Death. It was shocking and very bold. It’s not everyone’s style, but that’s the point—it created a loyal following of people who loved the brand’s irreverent style. It’s a great example of standing out in a crowded market by being different.

    Kate Orara:
We may not suggest waterboarding or electric shocking, but I get the point! So, in the channel space, what does a perfect customer journey using digital marketing look like to you?

    James Korte:
In an ideal world, the journey would go like this: the customer hasn’t heard of us, but they see our targeted ads on LinkedIn, our podcast sponsorships, or our presence at events. By the time they reach out, they’d think, “Blue Star is everywhere I am, and everyone I trust seems to be aligned with them.” They’d know who we are, what we do, and they’d trust that we know how to help them.

    Kate Orara:
Love it! What are some of the biggest mistakes you see businesses in our industry making in their digital marketing efforts today?

    James Korte:
Three points: First, a lot of businesses underinvest in marketing. It should be as prioritized as any other discipline, like HR or sales. Second, they try to be too broad in their market focus, listing 14 different industries they serve. Focus on a niche where you can truly stand out. Lastly, they often rely on incremental changes to their product rather than building a brand personality. Trust and human connection are what really matter. It’s about creating relationships and brand identity, not just incremental product changes.

    Kate Orara:
Couldn’t agree more. Human relationships are what drive loyalty, and focusing on a niche lets you speak directly to specific customers. For those with limited budgets, what’s a creative way smaller resellers and ISVs can compete against the larger brands? And if there’s one marketing tool or channel they should focus on, which would it be?

    James Korte:
Great question! Smaller players can focus on niche markets where they can provide something tailored and special. Look up reviews on larger competitors and see where they fall short, then capitalize on those areas. In terms of a tool, I’d recommend a no-code webpage builder or a design tool like Canva. These make it easy to create professional-looking materials without a huge budget, allowing smaller companies to look bigger and more polished online.

    Kate Orara:
I love those suggestions! Having a polished digital presence can make a smaller company look much larger, which instills confidence. As someone who’s often thinking ahead, what’s the wildest prediction you have for the future of digital marketing in our industry?

    James Korte:
I think we’re going to see a shift where personalities lead brands more than logos. Founder-led brands will become the norm, with CEOs and leaders creating content and being the face of the company. It’s a natural evolution with people like us becoming the leaders now. Tyler Young at Tonic POS is a great example—he’s built such a recognizable personal brand that’s aligned with his company’s goals. People will gravitate toward personalities over corporate branding.

    Kate Orara:
Couldn’t agree more. I think we’re definitely headed that way. It’s been so much fun chatting with you, and I think a part two is definitely needed—maybe after NRF! Before we close out, if there’s one thing in the channel you could change today, what would it be and why?

    James Korte:
Honestly? I wish I could go to every event! I always leave events feeling inspired, and there’s no better way to gather insights directly from people in the field. Conversations can lead to great ideas, and that feedback loop is invaluable.

    Kate Orara:
Absolutely. Thank you so much for your time, James. This has been an amazing conversation. Where can people follow you and stay updated with what you’re doing?

    James Korte:
Thank you, Kate! I’m active on LinkedIn, sharing content around marketing, design, and my observations on the industry. I’d love to connect with anyone interested. And a quick shout-out to Blue Star—we’re a technology distributor focused on building meaningful partnerships and helping businesses succeed through marketing and beyond.

    Kate Orara:
Thanks again, James! And that wraps up this episode of the Rising Stars podcast. A huge thanks to our listeners and our phenomenal guest for sharing such valuable insights.
