  • Cashless Society: The Pros and Cons

Cashless Society: The Pros and Cons

You’ve probably heard the term “cashless society” popping up in the news lately. But what exactly is a cashless society, and what does it mean for businesses and consumers?

Simply put, “cashless” not only includes debit and credit cards, but mobile wallets, electronic payment apps (like Zelle, PayPal, and Venmo), and cryptocurrencies.

    Who is cashless?

According to Square, half of consumers used their card for an $8 transaction in 2015. Four years later, the transaction size has dropped dramatically, with half of consumers using their card for a $4.50 purchase in 2019.

In fact, nearly one-third of Americans have stopped using cash for typical weekly spending, and on an international level, in Sweden only 15% of retail sales are made in cash, and some banks no longer handle cash at all.

    Who is NOT cashless?

Philadelphia was the first major city in the United States to ban cashless retail, and at the time this was written, New York City, Washington DC, San Francisco, and Chicago are currently considering similar policies.

On a state level, New Jersey and Massachusetts have banned cashless retail stores and restaurants.

So, why the debate? Let’s explore the benefits – and risks – of a cashless society.

    Contactless-e1574805742726

    Pros

    A cashless society could:

    • Boost Business Operational Efficiency: By presenting the opportunity for smoother, faster, and automated transactions and bookkeeping, businesses could complete customer transactions and back-office bookkeeping faster.
    • Strengthen Security: If a digital wallet falls into the wrong hands, it can be simple to shut down, and some cashless features (like biometric authentication) can enhance security.
    • Increase Convenience: Cashless payments (clearly) eliminate the need to carry cash, and digital payments can be made with a simple tap or wave of a smartphone. Additionally, cashless technology can create an easier currency exchange during international travels.
    • Lower Crime: A cashless society could potentially lower crime rates as there would be no tangible money to steal. Cashless transactions could also mean less money laundering because of a consistent paper trail would automatically be created.

    Cash-e1574805763949

    Cons

On the other hand, a cashless society could also:

    • Exclude Populations: For many individuals, cash is still king; 4 million households in the United States (or 6.5% of all households) were unbanked in 2017. A cashless society could exclude significant populations, like the elderly and low-income individuals, from being potential customers.
    • Create Security Risks: We know we just discussed security benefits, but there are also potential security risks to going cashless. For example, if someone’s phone is stolen, hackers could crack the PIN and access the victim’s mobile wallet(s). It’s likely that cybercriminals are working on specific hacking strategies in anticipation of a cashless, card-less future. Additionally, more cashless transactions means the potential for even more exposed personal information to possible data breaches, and for small businesses that could be a major risk: 43% of cyber-attack targets are small businesses.
    • Present Technological Problems: Simply put, technical difficulties (such as internet outages) could leave users with no access to money.
    • Increase Fees: According to XpressMoney.com, “Every time you pay by card, intermediaries charge a transaction fee. These fees would become unavoidable in a cashless society. On the other hand, most ATMs don’t charge you to withdraw cash, and you don’t pay any fees when you buy something with it. There’s no imminent danger of cash completely disappearing from circulation. However, both governments and consumers need to be aware of the potential pitfalls of a cashless society, as advances in technology mean we’re increasingly relying on digital forms of payment.”

Because Star Micronics is always leading and always innovating, our team likes to keep a finger on the pulse of the latest industry trends and keep you posted on how they could potentially affect your business.

Take a moment to tell us your thoughts on a cashless society in the comments below.

  • Buyers Guide: 5 Things to Consider When Purchasing a Scale

Buyers Guide: 5 Things to Consider When Purchasing a Scale

Any retail, restaurant, or hospitality venue that sells items by weight needs a scale to protect their customers and business. Point of sale (POS) scales are used by different types of merchants that charge for their items by weight, including supermarkets, jewelers, coffee shops, self-service restaurants and buffets, butchers, candy stores, and more. Whether you’re dealing in pounds of fruit or ounces of gold, scales measure the weight of a customer’s purchase, calculate the price accurately, and help track inventory.

On the surface, the scale’s operation seems relatively straightforward: weigh the items, print tags, and move on to the next customer. This deceptively easy process is backed and regulated by the science of weights and measures, a battery of federal and local laws, inspectors, and several government agencies dedicated to calculating weights and prices correctly. Although it may seem like overkill, these safeguards protect you from over- or under-charging customers and the fallout that comes from making these types of errors.

If you’re in the market for a new scale, consider your products and how accurate the scale needs to be, where it will be set up, and how often it should be calibrated. States monitor merchants with scales for accuracy, so know the local laws in your area to help ensure your POS scales are always in compliance.

No matter what type of business you operate, purchasing a NTEP-certified scale should be nonnegotiable. A retailer that is caught using a non-NTEP-certified scale may be subject to heavy fines, seizure of the illegal scale, or work shutdown. You should never purchase a scale that doesn’t have this important designation, but that doesn’t mean that every scale automatically goes through the process. NTEP certification was developed by the National Conference on Weights and Measures.

Look for a scale with a NTEP Certificate of Conformance (CoC), which means the scale can be used in a commercial setting to sell products by weight. Every NTEP-certified scale will have a CoC number that an inspector uses to verify that the scale meets the agency’s testing standards. Only a NTEPcertified scale, when properly inspected and calibrated, is “legal for trade.”

What else should you think about when you’re shopping for a scale? Here is a quick preview of the five things to put at the top of your list.

    Candy-e1574805441361

    1. State Regulations

Across the US, every state has its own agencies and departments that regulate scales and inspect them for accuracy. Some states may require a yearly inspection, while others are inspected less frequently.

Although every industry is different, some require a higher level of accuracy than others. One of the most talked about industries right now is cannabis retail, which relies heavily on scales for its products. Medical marijuana retailers and dispensaries are legal in more than half of the US, and although they sell products by weight, you can’t expect the same regulations that apply at a salad bar to also work for medical uses. In fact, the standards and regulations for cannabis scales vary by state, so choose the scale that will keep you in compliance and accurately serve your customers.

    2. Environment

Like any POS component, harsh environments demand more rugged scales. The unit that looks pretty sitting on a counter is not going to cut it in a busy warehouse or inside a cold storage facility. Before purchasing a scale, decide where and how it’s going to be used, so you can choose one that’s tough enough for your business.

    Pharmacy-Scale-e1574805457851

    3. Applications

Before you purchase POS scales, identify how they’re going to be used and what you need to weigh. Are you dealing with fresh produce, bulk candy and meat, or items like mail and packages? Are most of your products heavy or light? Large or small?

Star Micronics scales have the option to be powered by electrical outlet or battery for additional flexibility and portable use. This feature is especially valuable if you need to take the scale to farmer’s markets, street fairs, or pop-up stores.

    4. Connectivity Options

Adding a scale doesn’t mean you need a whole new POS system, so check your current system and see what connectivity options it has and go from there. Look at the operating system and make sure you choose a scale that’s compatible with what you already have. Star Micronics scales offer software support for Windows, iOS, and  Android, so adding the scale to an existing system is easy. The scales have a triple interface, and connect using Bluetooth BLE, USB, and Serial. Everything you need to get started comes in the box, including a waterproof and dustproof cover, power cable, and USB cable.

    5. Industries

For industries that deal with products by weight, including cannabis, retail, jewelers, restaurants, and pharmacies, a properly calibrated, NTEP-certified scale ensures you are not over- or under-charging customers. These POS components also assist with inventory tracking at your store or restaurant. Running a business that charges based on weight is impossible without a properly-calibrated scale, so make sure you choose the one that best takes care of your needs.

It’s important to pay attention to the accuracy class. Always choose a scale that’s the correct accuracy class, because a candy store doesn’t need to adhere to the same levels of compliance required for medicinal purposes.

    Coffee-Beans-e1574805473484

Leverage Agency Expertise for Installation Compliance

Once you have selected the scale of your choice, consider who will be in charge of installation, calibration, and getting the NTEP seal with your local measurement organization. You may think this is an easy DIY-job, but doing this by yourself is not recommended. If you try calibrating scales yourself, and they fail any tests administered by government agencies, you will be penalized with fines. • How Gen Z is Helping Brick-and-Mortar Thrive

How Gen Z is Helping Brick-and-Mortar Thrive

It’s not what you would expect. The very last group of people you’d imagine would prefer shopping in-person does just that. True digital natives, they grew up in the digital age, and are connected to a device for multiple hours per day.

Who are they? They’re Gen Z, and they love physical retail! In fact, according to a study conducted by IBM and the National Retail Federation, 98% said they prefer to shop in brick-and-mortar stores.

So why does Gen Z, or the generation of people born between 1996 and 2010, love physical retail? Let’s take a deep dive into what drives them to appreciate the in-store experience more than other generations and how today’s businesses can successfully engage with them.

Why Gen Z Loves Brick-and-Mortar Retail

    In-Person Shopping

First and foremost, according to the HRC Retail Advisory, Gen Z loves the in-person aspect of shopping at a mall or retail store. There’s something special about interacting with a brand in-person that online shopping just cannot do.

To leverage this unique advantage, focus on providing appealing store design as well as top-notch, personalized customer service – but only when your Gen Z shoppers want it (more on this point later).

    Being Rewarded

HRC also provided some interesting information about Gen Z and reward/loyalty programs.

According to the Advisory, “Gen Zers want and demand reward experiences, with instant feedback and satisfaction especially important.” Keep your shoppers coming back for more by offering more.

The Merge of Physical and Digital

Let’s not forget that Gen Z still loves their smartphones, but what sets them apart is that they look to retailers to merge the physical with the digital.

According to MediaPost, Gen Z looks for retail shopping to be supported by mobile technology so that they can browse a shoe aisle in-store and instantly receive a mobile coupon for said footwear. In other words, “To Gen Z, retail and ecommerce shopping isn’t an ‘us vs. them’ scenario; rather, the two complement each other and accentuate the shopping experience.”

How to Cater to Gen Z

    Support Self-Service

While they love being in the store, Gen Zers actually prefer to be left alone while they shop. In fact, a study conducted by Oracle NetSuite, Wakefield Research, and The Retail Doctor found that 42% of Gen Zers become annoyed by increased interactions with retail associates (versus millennials, Gen X, and baby boomers, who report feeling welcomed with more interaction).

Enable your Gen Z shoppers to shop within their comfort zone by incorporating self-service technologies, like AI- and VR-enabled apps (79% of retail executives feel the use of these would lead to increased sales), and self-service kiosk technology. It’s also important to provide a strong Wi-Fi connection so customers can successfully bridge the gap between physical and digital without any hiccups or headache.

    Create Convenience

It’s important to remember that many members of Gen Z came of age and began spending money when two-day delivery policies were common, so they value and have high expectations when it comes to convenience, a recent Morning Consult study To accommodate these expectations, be sure to offer convenient options like buy online/pick up in store, buy online/return in store, and more.

    Boost Branding

Gen Z spends over 4 hours per day on their smartphones. Are you capturing their attention online? To best appeal to them digitally, it’s a good idea to be active on social media and create content in an appealing format that targets their specific interests.

A good rule of thumb is to create content that’s easy to digest in just one glance, uses language that Gen Z uses (like emoji), and that’s highly shareable. Video is also a great idea – nearly half of Gen Z visits YouTube daily! Be sure to research which platforms to invest your time and money on – Instagram and Snapchat are more popular with Gen Z than Facebook, for example.

Looking to drive your shoppers to your social media accounts? A great way to do just that is by promoting your social accounts on your receipts, which customers are sure to see. Another great branding opportunity that’s sure to please is a loyalty program, which can also be promoted on receipts and feeds into the desire for Gen Z to receive perks, as well as connect the digital and physical retail realms.

In summary, keep these things in mind when it comes to Gen Z shoppers:

They value a convenient shopping experience that seamlessly merges physical and digital retail by incorporating mobile coupons and tailored social media messaging. They also prefer to shop at their own pace, in their own way. When it comes to this generation, it’s all about the omnichannel retail experience!

  • 3 Things to Consider When Choosing a Bank Kiosk

3 Things to Consider When Choosing a Bank Kiosk

Banking has changed quite a bit over the past few years, as mobile technologies rise and questions about financial security and data breaches are headline news. According to a survey completed by TD Bank, more than 50% of their customers are using online banking for normal transactions like deposits and transfers. But for more detailed banking information or financial products, people still prefer to do it the old-fashioned way and visit their local branch. For customers who want to visit the branch for routine transactions, many institutions have myriad options for them. Full-service assistance, drive-thrus, and self-service kiosks are usually available, but online banking customers may be most comfortable using the bank kiosk.

Market research shows that implementing a self-service kiosk means a better customer service for patrons. One published study found that when given the option, 89% of 1,000 people surveyed would “sometimes” or “always” choose a self-service kiosk over a full-service option. These kiosks are typically easy to use and engage people while they are making a purchase. In turn, stores, restaurants, airports, banks, and hospitality venues can reduce their payroll, boost profits, and provide a high level of customer service with less staff.

If you’re considering installing bank kiosks, consider these three things:

    1. Customer Experience

Bank kiosks can facilitate a better customer service experience through a user-friendly interface that helps reinforce your brand. Banking at the kiosk means it’s just the customer and the machine; there is no line backing up behind them. People have a few extra minutes to read about new products and services at their own pace and find something that piques their interest.

    2. Security Features

Don’t leave anyone’s financial information up for grabs. Banking kiosks should protect customers’ privacy just as well as an actual employee, so this hardware should be equipped with extra protection including:

    • Physical privacy screen: People shouldn’t be able to see the kiosk screen unless they are standing directly in front of it. Privacy screens help protect people’s financial information from prying eyes.
    • Physical and digital keys: A banking kiosk should require two keys to access the head and base for added security so it can’t be opened by just anyone.
    • Proximity detectors: Kiosks should be equipped with special sensors that can tell when a customer is approaching or departing. If a person leaves before logging off, the kiosk will automatically end the session.

    3. Software Security

Investing in kiosk hardware with the security options listed above is important, but don’t forget the software. Software security helps protect your customers from data breaches and fraud.

    • EMV-compliant card reader: Look for a kiosk equipped with a card reader that is EMV-compliant. Merchants and institutions using non-EMV-compliant devices are held responsible for fraud.
    • PCI-compliant PIN pad: PCI standards require secure processing for card transactions, so be sure to ask if your equipment is PCI-compliant.
    • Core platform integration: Bank kiosks should integrate directly with the bank’s core platform so it’s like visiting a teller and more secure than stopping by the ATM.

Bank kiosks are the preferred method for many customers who want to take a few extra minutes to review their account balances or skip the line because they’re pressed for time. A self-service kiosk serves a very specific purpose, but kiosks used in financial institutions need enhanced security features and PCI and EMV compliance to protect their customers’ sensitive information from fraud. Bank kiosks are a great way to generate interest in new financial products, eliminate wait times, and reach customers who want an omnichannel experience.

The future of many industries lies with self-service solutions. That’s why Star Micronics is offering free online ordering resources for resellers and software developers who are helping customers future-proof their businesses with self-service solutions.
